125cc - 400cc green laner

Looking for a bike, got my 33bhp restriction for another 18months, looking for a bike between these displacements, preferably around 250 or 350cc. Favourites are XR 250s and DR 350s but I'm looking at spending no more than £800 and most of the ones I've found seem out of range. Bike will be used for short commutes, no more than a few miles, but I'd prefer to avoid 125s so that the bike could be used for occasional longer (short motorway) journeys if needsbe.

I'm open to suggestions about my choice of bike, I've read that enduro styles make a great all rounder bikes, insurance is cheaper than a sports (18y/o 2 years NCB) and I'd quite like to get into green laning.

i recently got a DR350s 1991 for 700 quid, love the bike loads of power and mainly bugger laods of touque.

fine fore commute and cant wait to get off road i'm same as you 18yrs old and 2NCB with same licence and my insurance is on 225 fire and theft
compared to my VFR400 which was 800

Sounds great, where did you get your bike from? Where do you live to get insurance like that?
