My buildings and contents insurance is up for renewal. Northern Rock have sent my renewal notice and it's £80 more than last year.

So...does anyone recommend a good/cheap home insurer?

Thanks Thumbs Up

Best to probably have a look at www.moneysupermarket.com or similar to find the best deal.

I use Natwest Home insurance. They give you a discount if you are an Advantage Gold or Premier account holder. Customer service is second to none.

Hi,

More than's policy is quite comprehensive.

A useful inclusion is leagal cover, not all policy's (but most) have it so I would a bit extra for that

Sorry to drag this thread up again but I'm have a right howsyafather with insuring my home.

Basically, when Northern Rock did their mortgage report survey, they answered "Yes" to "Is there evidence of subsidence, heave or landslip".

Followed with: "Established residential area convenient for local amenities. The general condition of the property appears consistent with its age and type of construction. Future maintenance/upgrading consistent with age and type will be required. Evidence of movement was observed in the form of slight cracking/distortion in parts. This appears long standing and non-progressive and the likelihood of further significant movement seems remote. No structural works are considered necessary. The property is suitable for mortgage purposes."

Northern Rock consider this to be standard and do not count it as subsidence on my current buildings and contents insurance with them. (some insurers have categories of subsidence, in which case this would be the lowest category).

Most insurance companies ask the question, to which I have to say yes and then they don't want to know!!! Which basically means noone on my street (it's a terrace), my estate or possibly the whole of Stoke-on-Trent can get insurance as the movement described is pretty standard.

Do I just say no to the questions and risk them not paying out if I needed to claim?

I think you need to be honest about the survey with any house insurance, because if you ever do need to claim, not disclosing information could jepordise the pay out (whether it relates to the subsidence or not).

I think I would be very worried about not being properly insured. I would be tempted to stay with Northern Rock, expecially if your mortgage is through them as well.

Hi,

I suspect part of the problem is that the subsidence combined with your postcode probably means they assuming is mining subsidence (it may or may not be).

It may be a good idea to get a surveyor to clarify the position although you may find yourself permanently limited to a few insurers.

Regards
