Heading to wales for the weekend in a couple of weeks with a group of friends..

anyone go any suggestions for a route some of us can follow, as we can't be botherd keeping up with the quicker riders, and are more inclined to enjoy a good view, and cake shops Very Happy

we're staying near Hay on Wye, so something in that area would be nice.. up to approx 300 miles would be ideal.. not much longer tho..

Down to Brecon from there to Llandovery straight through to Llanwrda
turn off to Lampeter from there head to Newquay and up the coast road to Aberystwyth then down through Llangurig , Rhayader to Builth Wells and back to Hay on Wye .

I should think that would be around 200 miles through some stunning scenery , both coastal and mountains .

Seconded, that sounds like a cracking route to me!!!

Just one thing, coppers in mid Wales have been getting very heavy on bikers over the last couple of years, especially early in the biking year, so watch out for speed traps typically around Abergavenny - Builth Wells - Brecon area - they often have up to 6 camera vans deployed on a Sunday specifically targeting bikes.
Also, they tend to pull bikes over into laybyes and check plates, cans and visors, so if you have illegal ones it's an idea to change them for the weekend.

Variation on the route above:

From hay take the A438 and then the A470 to Brecon - don't turn off in to Brecon but take the bypass to the roundabout, and carry on along the A40 towards Llandovery - 2 or 3 miles along there's a layby on the right with a snack bar and toilets.

back on the A40 carry on westwards for about 5 or 6 bendy miles and then turn left on the A4067 towards Swansea - it's a lovely fast road going uphill across the mountains past a reservoir and then down into the Swansea valley to Craig-y-nos - the road is slow, bendy and built up for about 4-5 miles until the roundabout with a petrol station on the left just before it. After a couple of miles there's a roundabout with Brynamman A4068 signed to the right. Turn right and follow the road for 5 miles to Brynamman. At the mini roundabout turn right on the A4069 to Llangatog, head out of the village, over a cattle grid and you're on the mountain road - reasonable surface, deceptive tightening bends and sheep and wild horses At the top of the mountain, as the road starts going down there's a layby on the right with beautiful views, followed by a fantastic downhill switchback road, mostly new tarmac, finishing with a bridge and a sharp left. If you've got time turn round and do the last part uphill, it's loads of fun. Then there's a run along a river valley, narrow and bendy to Llangadog.

Total mileage so far is about 60, but it'll feel like more.

There are a few of pubs in Llangadog which serve food, and one of them has a rear courtyard which is quite secure for bikes.

It's then about a mile back to the A40, so you can either turn right to head back eastwards to Brecon and Hay (about 40 miles), or back to Brecon, down to Abergavenny, across to Pontrilas and back to Hay (about 60+ miles)

Or you can turn left and head for Carmarthen, NewQuay, Llangurig, Builth and Hay etc . which is about 140 miles.

There's some good roads whichever route you take, but take notice of the warning about Scameras and spotchecks , especially around the A40, and the police also patrol on Pans in that area.

Either way, enjoy.
