Quite a few of the metal components on my bike are rusty. I was wondering if this could be dangerous?

it could be

the chain if it's rusty will need lubing up and checking for tight spots.
care to list theses few parts as some are more vital than others.

is it surface rust or deep set in stuff?

A few bolts, and springs (not the shock absorber Laughing ) as far as I can see are rusting. Im not sure how deep it is, but I doubt it is deep. Is there any chemical or something that can be used to dissolve it?

Wire wool, wire brush, wd40 loosens it and "prevents" it from rusting further.. wont just fall off im affraid, get scrubing!

Eventually,yes.

Surface rust is seldom a worry,just unsightly and shows a lack of care or maintenance on the part of the owner.

Chassis components such as frame or suspension can be more serious. sooner or later the metal will rust through then the part will fail. Not good in a frame.

Prevention is better than cure,too many people view cleaning as a waste of riding time.

Cleaning is part of a sevicing procedure,and you will discover what needs done while washing the bike.

I also noticed that the two fairings are not attatched underneath the bike, and cannot be attatched to each other underneath. I havent had a problem with this so far, are there any implications for leaving it like this? I bought it second hand, and it runs perfectly, just a few details like this rust and fairings.

what bike is it? pictures of the fairing bit or perhaps some drawings in paint?

I use a lil bit of acid on a brush to remove rust from screws, wipe it off afterwards, however its 20years old and you can't purchase it anymore unless you nick some from college or school.

screws could be;
replaced with stainless ones
cleaned up with wirewool(or a pan scrubber) and/or;
vasolene put on them to keep them shin
just keep ontop of cleaning them.

waxoil is good as it seems to eat away at rust, but is unsightly and smells like chip fat on hot engine parts Thumbs Down

Clear nail varnish is also a good way to rust proof an area or baremetal or a colour that takes your fancy.

Best prevention is ACF-50 trouble is it expensive... its used on everything from aircraft carriers to aircraft, lasts 6months before another application is needed..

Removeing it is a job for a wire wheel/brush surface ruse isn't a big deal like has been mentioned but it will get progressivly worse so its easyer to keep on top of it rather than let it get too far.. hammerite do make rust sealing and prevention paint, but its still better to have it as clean as possible before spraying, lasts about 2/3 years
