I'll be selling my scooter soon, but want to keep the insurance going by insuring a frame so i get the extra year's ncb.

When buying a frame to insure, do i just need to make sure it has a V5? Also, how much am i looking at for a moped frame?

Must have a V5 as that'll have the frame number on it.
Ok, it'll have an engine number too, but that's not as important (if you swap engines you should have the V5 updated to show the new number).

It's the V5 that shows ownership, so to own the frame (rather than 'it just fell off the back of a lorry, honest officer') you should have it. The V5 will also show the issued registration plate. Your insurance may be interested in that Wink

I dont think you even need a V5, you can just insure it under the frame number. But.....

When I insured my old NSR250 prior to regitsering it with DVLA, I insured it using just the frame number (as it didn't have a number plate), I had to tell the insurance company within 14 days what the reg number was.

I suppose if you could find a frame and log book for next to nothing (it wouldn't be worth it if the saving on NCB was less than the cost of the frame), you could do that.

Or, just let your insurance run on the scooter. I've yet to do the same with my ZXR I swapped a couple of weeks ago.

Hi

Used to be that you could happily insure against a frame number for pretty much an unlimited time, but they now seem to have brought in new rules a few years ago to stop this.

All the best

If it has a V5, and therefore a registration plate, can i legally insure it?

If i can't i'll just sell the scooter about 2 weeks before the policy ends.

Why not leave the policy going on your scooter once you've sold it?

Surely that's not allowed?

Can you lay the policy up? (Just get F&T cover)

1. It's illegal under the current policy Ts&Cs
2. When the next owner insures it, my insurance may find out and bugger me.

Unless you were to claim, how would they ever know?

Suppose the person who buys it off me uses the same insurer. i'm sure it would come up on screen that there's already one policy on that scooter.

Surely for only a little bit more you could buy a clapped out old 125. You could even dismantle it to make it easier to store away. declare it sorn and then you've got everything required to insure it properly including a registration

You don't even need the frame, just a V5. I have a couple floating about, one from a bike that was torched outside my house and thrown in a skip and the other from a bike that we threw off a cliff then blew up for a film. You never know when a spare logbook will come in handy.

The insurance company aren't going to come and check if the bike actually exists, they have their money and that is all they want. Technically it is an offence not to inform the DVLA if you scrap a vehicle but it is very difficult to prove the non-existance of something.

My girlfriend's bike is in her name, she has her insurance policy, and cos it's only £15 to add it to my insurance I insured it as well.

So that's one bike with two policies in the same house with the same insurer. They didn't notice, so I pointed it out and then they didn't care. Smile

From memory when I brough in an import and had to ride it unregistered for an MOT and to the ministry for an inspection - They will insure a frame for you but will only issue a cover note if it doesn't have a reg mark. If it never gets a reg no, I don;t think they will give you road insurance only theft - which doesn't qualify for NCB. Not sure though - that was a while back so it need checking.
