I was out yesterday giving it a bit of stick and came round a corner really well and controlled and accelerated on up the straight.

i then realised i was talking to myself! Shocked coming up to corner ("woah, steady......now!) out the corner (then racebike noices going through the gears", "woohoo im f*ckin on it"!) down the straight.

its a weird sound its like when you put you head under the water in the bath when you were a kid and talked coz it sounded different or tapped the side of the bath.

i also noticed then when i came back through town i was muttering at people to myself "tosser" "move move, f*ck sake! idiot move over" "what the f*cks he wearing" etc

It dawned on me how much i do it when in a silly mood. I think i just get excited to be back out on the bike.

so just wondered do i need pills Crying or Very sad or does anyone else mutter in there lids or are you deadly silent?

Sparky

Yup, you are not alone!

I talk myself through manouvres, shout at other motorists, scream at the weather (occasionally! Embarassed ) and sing to myself.

Lucky my bike is quite loud and no-one else can hear me huh? Laughing

Talk? Well...

I normally have a good old singsong while im riding, thats good fun.

Although i think it was saturday evening, i had a full on debate and in depth discussion with myself on the 6 mile ride to my g/f's. My mate was ahead of me, and i started of by commenting on his riding - "Oh, he took that nicely", "yeah, yeah that wasnt bad" i replied..."Think hell get this next turn?", "nah dont think hell get it as perfect as before..." "ohhh, ooooh, oooooh, Nice!", "He did it" , "yeah, nicely too".

That went on for a mile or two, and then it turned to me, and how track racing ... how i was going to make the most of this season, and what bikes im going to ride, etc...

By the end of the ride, i had talked myself through my entire collection of motorcycles, my entire collection of racing kit, all my freinds that own motorcycles, and some of my more amusing pairs of socks...

I got off the bike still nattering away, turned round and goes...

"Stop talking to yourself, your confusing me"...

"Its that pair of wallice and gromit socks, that are baffling me the most mate..." Laughing

Ahhh the amusements of riding when mentally unstable Laughing

i think (mr degree in experimental psycholgy here) that the act of riding is a balance between the 'fight and flight' centres of your brain. its fear controlled by aggression.

your brain probably finds it easier to process the environment by utilising its various functions. talking abuot what you are seeing is also a feeback system - you internalise the external, and then vica versa confirming, and labelling, what you are seeing.

experienced riders will use 'perceptual chunking',somewhat in the same way as you don't have to read every letter of a word to understand the words meaning, to ignore safe areas of the environment and only concerntrate on what may be a hazard.

hence skill through experience.

just my two p's worth.

and i tend to sing morrissey songs in my hemet..ooh the shame...

I too talk in my helmet, sing (badly) bop my head on occasion, also tap my fingers and feet on pegs/bars/tank.

I'm a great fan of screaming profanities at oblivious tw@s on the road/pavement.

more so when I have a dark visor on though.

Great stress relief

Allegedly speaking yourself through manouvers is a good way to improve your riding, they used to make you talk through what you were doing when you took the advanced car test.

It shows that you are concentrating on what you are doing.

And yes i do talk and sing to myself in my helmet. (hell everyone else is weird it's not me really)

Yes,

amongst the things i say are

Arrow "I am Lord Kifi of Solomon Pongo" whatever the FUCK that means. I usually do this whilst battering my chest in a vain attempt of a war cry, pretending to be some polynesian chief. It's quite funny and all my mates have to agree that it's amongst one of the most random things they've ever heard me say, but even funnier when you see a crazed guy do it whilst riding

Arrow Also, when i was filtering through traffic today in london, i couldn't help shout "Ovarian Dandilion" at passers by or cars that tried to cut me up!

Usually on country roads i mutter to myself along the lines of these

Arrow Bend approaching, 11 o clock, slow right down. Boom 4th, Bang 3rd, carry the revs, keep left/right. watch the vanishing point. Steady, brake, lean, chase the vanishing point. Power power, wheee! - usually helps with the rush even if it's only a 30 mph bend.

But if you're dead bored, just try saying some imaginative things. I betcha there is not one soul on this planet that will ever think about conjuring up Lord Kifi of Solomon Pongo when riding their bike!

got to say this has to be the funniest thread I have read in a long time.

I didnt realise it, but reading all your posts has made me think how much I talk, sing, bop around, and make a general fool out of myself whilst on a bike! Laughing

My bad habit has to be riding past my mates slapping the rear seat as if it was me thrashing a horse to go faster! Twisted Evil

Another one is when riding on a massively long road and passing cars, removing my hands off the throttle / handle bars and looking at the cars im passing (With my jet black visor on) and pretending to row past them in a canoe.

Either that or sitting on my pillion seat or tank and genrally riding like and idiot to pass the time.

I am a sucker for huming the top gun theme tune whilst absolutly giving it all my bike has to offer round corners on straights etc etc.

Why i hear you ask?? gawd knows.

I think I am in need of mental help to say the least!!

Get an MP3 player, put it on random and when the top gun theme comes on it's ace and spontanious..often inappropriate but great! Mr. Green

As for slapping rear seat as if on a horse... you reminded me tis the grand national tomorrow... tar.

GPZ has too much engine brakeing for me to remove hands off bars, but I used to coast down hills hands off the bars and turn slight corners on the NSR Cool
