As per the topic how long does it take for the tax office to give back overpaid tax? , the tax inspectors always seem to have a thing for me and seem to put me onto emergency tax whatever job I do, and subsequently I paid well over £900 tax too much.

So I filled in a form a few weeks ago to reclaim this overpayment since I wasn't working then (hence could not get it back via an increased personal allowance) , how long does it take for a cheque from the IR to come through my letter box?.

£900 might not be an awful lot but hey , I've got expenses and the part time crap job which doesn't pay an awful lot isn't paying the bills.

Thanks

For me it was about 3 weeks!! Mr. Green

I sent my coveriing letter, all pay cheques and related p45's and asked for a refund to centre 1 (scottish tax office)

£700 back, I was well happy. That was last year.

it all depends if they are auditing you, the person who autherises payment or sometimes they just pick a random amount of money so anyone with a rebate of say £560 would get checked.

inland revenue really are a law unto themsleves, they hold all the aces.

also depends when return is submitted, i never return mine in the first month i get it (as most people send them off straight away) and they just get put in a big pile and get worked through slowly.

also make sure it is in way before any deadline usually july/ august. payment in about 4-6 weeks.

I was owed £52 from when i first started working at my part time job 2 years ago.
I went into the tax office yesterday and they have sent my p60 off so i can get a refund of the above amount, should i receive this fairly quickly???

When I had to claim some tax back I did it over the phone.

Rang them up, explained the situation, and within a week I had a cheque in my hands. Smile

The thing is I'm not a self declare type tax payer , too much was taken via the PAYE system , and hence it has nothing to do with my personal tax returns , so it seems pretty random how long it takes then, bugger

Ive been finding out about this recently. I'm owed £444 from the last tax year. I phoned the inland revenue, to which i was told that I need to wait for my P60 (April/May) then send that with a covering letter requesting a tax assesment. Then i will be able to see if i'm owed tax.

Is the any way i can speed up this process i have my last pay check from the last tax year, which shows,

Gross pay: 2021.97
Tax: 444.62

Now i from these figures shows that i shouldnt of paid any tax this year (apart from NI). So couldnt i send this instead of waiting for a P60?

I really could do with this money sooner than later, as its likely that ill have to be paying the £400~ excess on my insurance pretty soon.

Nick
