I've been looking for parts for my NSR on eBay for a while now, and there's a guy breaking one who I have contacted. For all the parts I want, he has quoted a fair price, but it's quite a bit of money. My worry is that because the deal is not actually going through ebay, he could keep the money and not send the parts.

His feedback is very good, and he has sold many bike parts before, aswell as general stuff, so I think he might be a breaker using a personal account.

My question therefore is, how do deals like this happen? Should I ask him to set a buy it now, and get slightly more security in getting the parts? Or just trust him and send the funds and await the parts?

I think instinct will help you decide, you say he has got good feedback so that may sway you to do the deal outside of ebay but as you say you could ask him to add a buy it now button and make sure you are sitting over the pc if he can lump the parts in a job lot. Just make sure if you do do a deal ask him to email a receipt once he gets payment or something like that. Either way get something via email if poss, and good luck Thumbs Up

Just remember Ebay wont cover you if this guys f*cks you over. The best bet i agree would be to ask him to set a buy it now and let you buy it then your safe if he turns out to be a knob Thumbs Up

Isnt this what the 'private auction' bit of it is?

Nope I just misunderstood, no problem. I thought that a private auction meant that you could 'select the bidders'

You were almost there Simon. A private auction is what you should do at this point, Fuzz. Email him and ask him to set one up, it's basically a normal auction, but only you will have access to it. To me it's the best feature on eBay, even if a lot of sellers don't know how to use it. Rolling Eyes

Never knew that. So what does it involve on the sellers part, ie. how do you set one up and limit who can access it?

I suppose it's similar to a PM on here. The seller goes through the private auction pages, and creates a listing just like normal. But at the end, they tell eBay the only user/s they want to be able to access the auction.

The only thing I can find about private listings is where the bidders are hidden from each other.

Confused It seems eBay have removed the function. Well, the seller can always just put it in at the price you said on a BIN, and put 'This is a private auction for eBay User **** only.'

Is it too far to collect? Thats the only way to be sure.

It depends what you mean by quite a bit of money. Up to about £100 i'd trust someone. If they ripped me off i'd make sure it cost them 10 fold.

Anything over £100 and i'll usually collect, it's worth an extra £20-30 in petrol.

You should be fine, gut instinct is usualy a good guide when using ebay.

I don't have any way to collect unfortunately, I don't drive and neither does my gf. Can't carry them back on the bike either. He says postage will be free anyway if I take the lot off him.

I might be getting a lift over there, so I could view before buying. He is listing requested items anyway, so I think he is trustworthy.

Just my Penny Coin Penny Coin I never had any problems dealing with online breakers and I always got all the parts I needed. You should be fine but if you can add another layer of security just do it for peace of mind.

I don't know if he is a breaker though. I suspect it, because his past auctions have been mostly parts from all types of bikes, but he has also sold personal items like clothing and toys aswell.
