Just been fitting a new chain, got the proper chain breaker/riveter etc. So I break the old one easy enough but I goto fit the new one and I'm unsure if it's a rivet link or a press-on one (prev chain I fitted was a press on but had a flat end), this one had tiny little holes on the end which made me think it was a rivet.

But as I use the rivet tool it just causes me to split the chain again....

Should rivet ones be hard to get into the link? This one was bloody hard like my press-on one

Heres a pic but bear inmind that most of the hole was made by the chain rivter..

Thanks

Certainly looks like a rivet one to me.
The Chain Breaker and Riveter will have different 'bits' to break and rivet - are you sure you have the right bit in there?

I'm pretty sure I have, Has 'Gold' and 'Silver' bits. Gold for the breaking and Silver for the 'riveting'

Oh dear, it looks like you're having the same experience I had.

You're trying to use a stake-riveter when you need the other type (it requires a hammer). The one you're using is trying to deform the rivets by pushing them outwards from the central point. It ain't gonna happen. You need to deform the shoulders, as with the others.

Yes just been reading all 5 pages of your thread. Is there a way to do it without the proper tool? (I said I read all your thread but I went cross eye'd half way through Smile )

Hold a hammer or a solid piece of metal at the other side of the chain, roll the link round onto the rear sprocket and using a ball peen hammer rivet the ends of the link.

The trickiest bit is getting the sideplate on,and you've already done that, just peen the ends and you are done.

Thanks guys, I guess I'll have another go tomorrow (gotta brush up on my hammer skills first!) if not I'll pop it to my local bike shop and no doubt they'll do it in about 2mins flat.
