I went out and bought a can of chain degreaser the other day... and I noticed that it smelled exactly like brake and clutch cleaner. I also got my local car mechanic (me brother) to give it a sniff, and he said the same thing.

So basically, my question is this... Is chain degreaser just brake and clutch cleaner with a different name so that companies can charge more for it?

Could I just get a load of industrial strength brake and clutch cleaner from my brother's garage and use that to clean my chain, or is it actually not the same stuff... and could it knacker my chain?

AFAIK, brake cleaner and electrical contact cleaner are the same, and can be used in palce of each other. Personally, I just use white spirit. Does the job as well as anything else, and costs a tiny fraction of what you would pay for a branded degreaser.

Ah... but I can get uber cheap brake and clutch cleaner... from my brother's boss.

But out of interest, what is the current cost of parrafin? Is it still blue as well?

always thought that parafin was the only thing to use on chains.

espescially 'o' ring ones anyway, as it doesnt wash the grease out and is has slight lubricating properties untill chain oil/ wax can be applied

The only reason I use white spirit rather than paraffin is that white spirit evaporates off in 5 min, and there is no fling off when you start up. But paraffin should be more than sufficient for the task. Surely you cant get degreasing stuff cheaper than teso value paraffin bottles.

What is this? You and him getting stoned on anything you can get your paws on? Laughing

I've found spirit is the best stuff to de grease my chain i've really bothered buying fancy sprays.

Not even carb cleaner, i just use a bowl of petrol Laughing
