Anyone ever dabbled in crash helmet painting?

Plenty of old knackered lids around to mess about on so I'd like to have a go, but could use some advice on what paints are good - I'm assuming they need to be fairly 'kind' so was thinking acrylics?

(This'll be where ZRX grumps at me for not being born with an encyclopedic knowledge of painting techniques and the safety nazis run screaming from the room to check their helmet is still safely ensconsed within it's hermetically sealed vacuum box).

If you're interested i can get the details, i reckon it'll be totally worth it, could paint G's Track bike all sorts of 'bling' designs Razz

From what I hear on the grape vine it can be a very risky business painting/spraying helmets.

Two main safety dilemas:

1) The wrong sort of paints can cause long term damage to the structual qualities of the helmet. Squashed melons!

2) If the wrong laqured finish is applied, the paint can grip the road duing a crash, rather than slide over it, therefore causing the occupants head to be violently ripped back, etc. Broken neck city! Also, I assume the wrong paint underneath can do the same thing once the top clear coat is worn through!

From what I hear, this is a very strict art and if you are not sure if the paints you are using are the correct ones for the application, then use at your own risk, but please don't offer them to anyone else til you are sure it is definatly safe!
