Hello again all,
Well, I managed to fix my 'petrol all over the place problem', I re-fitted the carbs properly tucking the overflow hoses right down and to the rear, now onto the next. Two (the two to the right hand side) of my 4 pots are not firing, I know this as I tried desparately to keep the thing running the other night but couldn't. Then in a fit of utter madness I touched the downpipes. The first to were cold but the third had me running into the house to hold my fingers under cold running water for 10 minutes!!
There is a lovely spark in the two 'offending' pots so I assume the problem to be fuel related. If I start tinkering with two relevant carbs, what action should I take? I had a tentative investigation into one of them and all seemed okay (no tears in the diaphragm) and the other 'bits' seemed to be in order.
So guys (or indeed ladies) what do you reckon?
Also, when I DO actually get on the thing and attempt to obtain an MOT certificate how dimly will the chaps there view the slight pitting at the top of my front forks? It is well away from the distance of travel made by the fork seals. Question

Are you sure there aren't two separate fuel lines going into the carbs? Because if there were they'd be one for 1+2 and one for 3+4, hence this'd be your prime culprit for a fueling problem on one of those pairs.

If the engine has been running:-

If the non firing plugs reek of petrol then its an electrical problem, if youre gettng a spark then its a case of swapped HT leads/firing order.

If no petrol on plugs then check the float bowls are filling by switching all electrics off petrcock off, and undoing drain screws and seeing if petrol is in the bowls, if not then problem is between floatvalve and tank, sometimes after rrebuilding carbs they need a one off 'tap' on the bowls with something soft, just to release the float valve and let petrol flow.

as far as i'm aware they cant fail you for pitted forks, only if the fork seals are leaking, ive had pitted forks sail through MOT without even a comment. The bike MOT is nowhere near as comprehensive as the car one, brakes, lights, anything leaking that shouldnt, anything major obviously bent, tyres and exhaust, i was allowed watch one of my bikes last time, i think the bloke did it in 10 mins, that'll be 25 of your pounds sir! - almost felt cheated!... mind you none of my bikes could be classed as sportsbikes, maybe they're more stringent with those.
