Well today i headed around my local bike dealerships etc to try on lids and i realised exactly how widely the design of lids varies from manufacturer to manufacturer.

One thing i did notice is the difference in chin bar depth.
The helmet that fitted my noggin best in todays expedition was the Shoei Xr-1000. However it had what felt like a very short chin bar and left the underside of my chin feeling quite exposed.
At the opposite end of the scale AGV seemed to have HUGE chin bars making the lid feel more enclosing (but the increased size of the lid made it feel more bulky in general).
A middle ground seemed to be the Arai helmets - Condor and Astro J/R.

HJC didnt suit my head at all.

The point of this thread though, is do you experience similar differences with your own helmets and does the level of chin/neck exposure bother you?
On crappy days do you get dirtier for example? Or do you just wear a neck warmer and get on with it?

Im going to go with the XR-1000 as i can get it for quite cheap from J&S,and the fit is great, but i was just wondering if you guys noticed the differences in this area?

My AGV Airtech has a flip down piece of rubber underneath the chin guard that deflects wind and crap from my neck.

Other than that, I'll wear a neck tube on harsh days, but I don't like to as I find it deflects breath onto my visor and makes the strap feel uncomfortable.

Makes me look like teh ninj4 though.

I don't worry about it. If I was riding a lot in an urban environment I would wear an open faced lid. To me, the additional visability you gain outweighs the lessened protection.

Out of town, well I have a large beard so my face doesn't get all that cold Wink .

I was at a crash recently, were a lady had dithed her bike on a fairly nasty corner, she seemed ok, bruised and shocked except she was wearing an open face helmet and left hald her chin on the A1.
Put me right of open face helmets! a prosthetic chin would have a certain amount of cool though if it had some kind of gadget attachments.

It wasnt so much the lack of protection that i meant. The chin bar on the shoei would certainly take the fall rather than your exposed under chin, but i was talking of windchill and acruing filth and the like.

I really wouldn't worry about it.

I find with my Shoei that it needs a good tug when putting it on to cover my chin proporly, ie rotating it forwards. Once it's there it's fine though. If I just pull it straight down onto my head, it doesn't fit right, and feels wrong.

Can't say I've ever really had a dirty chin from riding in any helmet though.

I've just bought an Arai Tour X Motard, the chin exposure is more than on my older Shoei but so far (and only two days of using it) I've had no bother getitng a cold chin on day to day riding, I'll be keeping the Shoei for longer hauls though.

In general no helmet fits me, I'm bang on 56cm (top end of small) and I have what seems to be a 'squashed' head, being longer from front to back. I basically have to 'wear in' my lid so it changes slightly to suit my bizarre head.

Luckily I look normal out of it...

I've got a Shoei Raid 2 lid and as you said it does leave the chin a bit exposed and I haven't exactly got a large chin.
I always wear a balaclava so don't really notice it although I'm sure it would increase wind noise.
I don't think it's a safety problem as if my chin hits anything then it probably means my heads already been detached from my body!

Would this be the slightly iffy chinese pilots elmit?

Most american coppers use openface helmets and just wear normal clothes, and thats on american roads Shocked

Quite fancy an openface helmet for offroading and whatnot.. if i was doing a round europe tour i'd probably go for one, allot less hassle..

Ive just bought a suomy extreme as it was the only lid that felt like it protected me without really restricting shoulder checks and is stupidly light. Great tint on the visor too. Looks yellow in the pic although it is actually white. (They come without flowers and glitter for the boys Laughing )

Not tried that on the bike yet. It actually would be my equally as illegal but much less badly constructed German army riot helmet.
