Is it illegal to listen to music whilst riding your bike? I have been doing it since i started riding cos i was told by my CBT instuctor that "car drivers listen to music why shouldnt you", but was told today by another biker that its illegal!
Who is right?

As far as I'm aware it's legal. I know I always did, and I know most people on here do it too. It's just like ear plugs! Very Happy

I ride with an earphone in my left ear so i can hear traffic behind me and my engine for gear changes (still a noob). Was just worried about getting stopped for it.
So what does everyone listen to?

Definitely not illegal.. but I can't understand why you would want to? I think it's a bit unsafe being unable to hear things around you and I also use hearing for knowing when to change gear etc from the sound of the engine.

You can use your rev counter over listening to the revs. You cant hear much of whats going around you anyway because of wind noise, the engine and the exhaust (bike dependant). Also horns would still be able to be heard over the headphones. Well this is how i justify it anyway.

I always listen to my music through both ear phones when on the bike and as for views on distraction it is entirely dependant on the person, because i dont get distracted one bit, as for the music i deem to be nicer background noise as opposed to listen to whats on the road.

I dont get why people think its ok to have a stero playing in a car whist talking on the phone via handsfree kits whlist fiddling with everything else in the car whilst driving?

Just really think its down to riders concentration skills and making yourself aware of whats going on around as when your on the bike your surrounding environment changes at a rapid pace which you must keep up with.

I listened to music until my mp3 player fell out of my pocket and smashed in loads of bits, i listened to both earphones and sometimes forgot it was on because i was still concentrating.
