A mate of mine is selling his setup soon, and seeing as I'm getting my insurance payout I'm thinking of getting it.

He's selling an Opteron 146 (2.0Ghz, 1Mb L2 cache) and an nVidia 7800GT 256MB PCI-E. He wants £250 for the lot, but I need a new motherboard as I'm selling my current setup to help me fund it. Anyone got any recommendations for a good board that will allow me to overclock it fairly stably (is that a word?!)?

He said he's running it on an Asus board at the moment and has got it running at just under 3Ghz, although I'm not so worried about running it that high, I'd just like to get a bit more out of it. I'd rather get a stable board with a lot of features, but it has to have SLi support.

Cheers.

i take it he's including his case too?

Overclocking will need a decent cooled case

Nah no case.

I've got a decent case as it is with a few fans and an exhaust blower. I'm not on about extreme overclocking, just wanna try and get a bit more out of it before I end up going down the watercooling route.

My 3200+ Venice Core runs at about 28-29C even under load, and the case temp isn't a great deal more, so I'm fairly happy with the case/cooling I have at the moment.

Can't find any ASUS opteron boards that do SLI.

Next best thing is probably DFI LANParty.

OHHH thanks for telling me! if i had of known i wouldnt have being running 4 pc's on Abit boards for the last 5 years.
Funny really as they have never gone wrong or played up in anyway at all.

But maybe you was just generalizing and didnt mean that all Abit boards are rubbish because you say they are.

Nope, Asus boards and DFI boards rule, Had two abit boards, one was shite, won't buy another if i can help it, also wouldn't touch Giga-Byte (had about 12, all shite.) or MSI.

I had a Suzuki GP 125 a long time ago that wasn't very good but i wouldn't assume that all Suzuki's are the same as i havnt ridden them all.

Yes, and if i got to test every motherboard i was interested before I was buying it I might feel a bit differently Smile

I must point out that my opinions are made on motherboard released within the last year Smile.

Been using MSI boards for a while now, stock box and a couple of fairly heavily OCd systems, can't rate them highly enough. Asus on the other hand, now there's a brand I won't touch again...

Wow. A fried board. There's a brand specific thing. Y'know, if you look hard enough you could probably find a picture of any brand you'd care to name in a similar state.

yea, but i didn't have to look hard for that as it's on another forum that I'm on... certainly doesn't make me want to have MSI the best part of 100 quid.

And this is another forum you're on, where someone is telling you that in 6 years and 8 or 9 builds, he's had no duff boards at all. Including two of the boards being abused something rotten by someone learning the basics of overclocking.

Yea, 12 gigabyte motherboards... 3 are replacements for other gigabyte motherboards, and they weren't cheap, 60 quid a piece.

Cheers for all the input lads.

I'm running a Gigabyte GA-K8NF-9 at the moment, and after looking at the CPU support list on www.gigabyte.com.tw I see it will support an Opteron 146, so I think I'll just stick with this board. I was thinking about going SLi but to be honest I did have a 7800GTX a little while ago and that was more than capable on it's own, so a 7800GT shouldn't be far behind. Just thinking it'll save me a few quid, after all I dont /really/ need SLi. I think I'll use the money I was going to spend on a motherboard to get myself another GB of RAM. The setup will then be an Opteron 146, 3GB of RAM and a 7800GT so it should be more than capable of running anything at full whack.

Cheers, Thumbs Up.

Gigabyte are not crap.

I've built about 8 PC's now and all of those are running Gigabyte boards with no problems. My dad was running his Gigabyte board for 7 years with not one hitch. He upgraded recently to an Asus SLi Deluxe board and has had nothing but trouble with it. He's had to flash the BIOS about 2-3 times to get it to run properly, whereas all the Gigabyte boards I've ever used have worked perfectly straight out of the box. If I was going to part with any money for a new board it certainly wouldn't be for an Asus one.
