So I was cleaning my rear brake today and was playing around with the piston cleaning and pushing it back in when I looked at it closely I noticed that the rubber seal was coming loose and in one place had buckled into a little loop. Haynes says i need a new one anyway but do I really? I tend to reuse washers, gaskets and such so would I really need a new one? I've removed the brake from the line (changing them to braided) so i now have no pressure to be able to get the darn piston out so do you think I can leave it as is or would I have to get the piston out via air compressor and replace the seal? Does it do any harm not having a seal there anyway?

Cheers
R

Hi

The seal you can see is the seal to stop crap getting in there. The caliper will work without it, but will seize up far more rapidly.

All the best

Well, thats good. Not TOO much to worry about then, and as time is limited I don't think I'll bother this time. I'll change it when i overhaul the calipers, but I'm more likely to sell the bike before then!

Cheers.

A weight off my mind

Hi

If you can get a new seal I would fit one now (well, a set). Otherwise just means faffing round again and bleeding the brakes twice.

All the best

Keith

Brakes are over rated.
