Hey guys, been reading a few threads and thought id join in! my names bryce and im just turning 20 from scotland.

im thinking about doing my full test (i'll have to be restricted though) and basically, what i wanna know is if an R6 or similar style performance/looks is suitable for me. I have a car also which i wanna keep so my biking will be a hobby, therefore the reason im looking at a higher end bike is because I wont be able to afford to change again when im unretricted, I may also track the bike.

any advice/thoughts etc would be great.

bryce Smile

edit: also I like to think I have good self control. ie. the bike is only going to go as fast as i want/make it go.

personally i dont think an r6 is a good first bike because the pegs are high, and it seems to caryy its weight quite high but you will probably get the hang of it after a while. I think its a good bike but it will take a while to get confidence on.

Im thinking of a 99 r6, so it could be the other ones are different.

other race replica bikes may be ok, but i think the r6 is a bit tricky
i know that the thundercat, tt600, and gsxr600 srad are easier to ride when you are new to big bikes

Something like a Bandit or an ER6 sor SV650 something like that for a first bike. You don't pass your car test and go and buy a porsche. Most end up with a clio, corsa etc.

yeah I know what your saying, but the bike will be restricted to 33bhp for 2years, unless I resit when Im 21 in 18months.

So its not really a 350bhp Porsche Im gonna be driving, its a 70bhp, which looks good, handles good but has little power - until I get used to the machine. Then when I do get full power, I'll have a blast Very Happy

I cant afford to chop and change, my bike will prob be a one off buy, and do me 5+ years.

Have you ridden a bike before?

As "only" 70hp = 0-60 in 4 seconds and 130+mph (and it does not take long to get there).

In car terms its pish all but in Bike terms its a fair bit.

Just out of interest what year R6 was it you were looking at?

I've got a 99 R6, as long as you can respect it, it will serve you well. I like it and think it's taught me a lot riding it.

The only thing that it could possibly do with is a steering dampner as it does like to shake it's head every so often under certain conditions.

Hope this helps

Soz just re-read what I posted, didnt make it very clear - I meant it'd be like a 70bhp Porsche, not a 70bhp bike.

Not to sure what year tbh, was looking around 52reg (2002-2003). Reason for this is I dont like repair bills and always buy my cars that are still under warranty - maybe bikes are different though?

Looking to spend around £2500 - £3500 on the bike, if this is any help to what age I should be looking at?

Get a few insurance quotes first mate I think that may be of more relevance to a 20 year old that if it good bike or not

20 yo, No NCB, No experience, Full UK licence, No pillions, £3k bike, 2000miles/annum, No convictions etc.

Here's the results...

Yamaha R6 - £503.46 TPFT (Carole Nash)
Suzuki GSXR 6 - £965 TPFT (Suzuki insurance)
Kawasaki ZZR 6 - £542.44 TPFT (Bennets)

Just outta interest, I asked what the ZZR would be fully comp, it was only £1017.

Can these quotes possibly be right? Seems pretty cheap for the R6 and ZZR.

I got letters through from Carole Nash confirming my quote of £503.46 but it says its for a Yamaha YZF... Confused which one?!

Full name of the R6 is YZF-R6

Tried e-bike insurance?

Bike insurance is generally cheaper than car insurance 'cos when you crash you normally only kill yourself, so the payouts are lower. Less personal injury claims from passengers for whiplash

There's also the YZF-R1.... doesnt specifically say which one.

Not tried e bike yet, I'll give em a go shortly.

Just tried Bennets for the R6, its coming out at £438 with £400 excess, TPFT. Even for a bike that seems incredibly cheap?

Please correct me if Im wrong though. Smile

are you sure you mean ZZR 6 and not the ZX6R, as you seem to be looking at the sports 600s....
