Simple rule of thumb

If the traffic is moving at less that 10mph you may pass if safe to do so on the outside or between two lanes of traffic going in the same direction.

If passing cars moving any faster than 10mph your menover may bee seen as an unsafe overtake so take care its is safe.

Just don’t pass in the inside (i.e. next to the curb) and you pretty much ok.

One word or warning cagers often make no allowances for filtering bikes so be extra careful when filtering and if it look dangerous don’t do it.

It's legal, but:

Don't filter on the left.
Be aware that drivers will turn/pull out in front of you without warning.
Don't take the piss speedwise.
If you're prone to ogling members of the opposite (or same) sex, doing it when filtering is Not A Good Idea®

I use my horn like a bastard when I'm filtering. It's like watching the Red Sea being parted.

I use it before an overtake too. Indicator on and horn.

If you are filtering on the right and the car on your left slows right down, leaving a gap to the car infront of it, stop alongside with it, until you can see if anyone is emerging from a junction on your left that you haven't seen.

You don't want one of those accidents.

Read on the net about filtering.

You learn some points in your theory, like watching out for pedestrians randomly running out into the road, horses and people opening doors as you pass through cars.
When I filter, keep a keen eye, a steady speed, and that back brake gently on so you can just stamp down when you need

Sorry just wanted to add, horses cant open doors. Rolling Eyes Thumbs Up

You can undertake just as safely as overtaking, this is if you assume driver's make no observation. Watch their indicator's, their sterring wheel and the fron wheel for sign's of them turning. Always allow time/space to stop as well.

Filtering on the left is just as good as on the right as long as your careful. Be wary round Police though, they may not like it.

As far as I'm aware, filtering (passing between two lanes of cars) is somewhat of a grey area.

I've heard of bikers having accidents whilst filtering who then who then get the full blame slapped on them because the plod charge them with 'driving without due care and attention'.

Having said that I have filtered past coppers in standing traffic and they haven't shown any concern.

So as the poster said above, only filter between stopped/'slow moving' traffic, look over the cars and also into them, what is the driver doing? has he/she seen you? is there a junction off to the left/right that traffic may want to move to? is one of the lanes moving but the other not? etc?

Basically if you feel it's unsafe, stop.

Watch out for pedestrians, There fucknig dodgey when they step out infront of a bus you are filtering pass ( thats why I do like 2mph past vechiels I cant see over the top of )

Just dont be a dick and keep an eye out for the "MR IM IN A CAR AND I HAVE TO WAIT, SO YOU SHOULD TO" There wankers.

Pass a couple of cars at first, just get into it, thats what I did, I filter all the time now, I still fuck up when getting to the front somtimes as when the lights go green its a bit dodgey.

You cant go over the speed limit for that road,

its classed as overtaking, so the rules apply, such as do you have time and space to complete the manouver,

I nearly killed a woman on friday at 35mph(in a 50) I nearly punted her with a GPZ, I was filtering, didnt see her crossing the road,

could have bene very nasty, but for somereason it didn't bother me and I left the biddy screaming in the road as I rode off, I didnt hit her so saw no reason to stop.

just don't be too cheeky theres alot of road rage about and people are wayy too quick to see red and go ape shit and chase you while a bike has excellent power to weight ratio vs cars top of the range BMWs can and WILL keep up.

watch out for people moving to the white line to block your path, the bastards will and do do this out of spite. I find that the sportier (or more chav boyracery) the car is the more likely they are to do this.

Stay in a low gear, they'll hear you coming better and you have more chance of squirting into gaps or out of trouble. Cover the brake AT ALL TIMES. Try not to filter past a car if theres a gap in the adjacent lane big enough for him to dive into, he might do it quickly without looking for a bike. Watch for cars joining from the side, especially as their front bumpers tend to cross the white line at times when they swing round.

With regards to it being legal, I'm never sure. I go to uni in lancaster and the whole city is a big 2 lane one-way system thats constantly clogged, so filtering is necessary. But I've never had the balls to filter past a cop car, just in case Embarassed

Filtering at about 30-45 mph is good fun on a gridlocked dual carriageway. I sometimes leave early just to hit the traffic Very Happy

Yeah the police may not like you doing this because it is illegal !

Read the highway code any undertaking is illegal unless all vehicles ahead are clearly turning right, or if you are on a duel carriage way in slow moving traffic and the right hand lane is moving slower then the left.

We however live in the real world. Don't tell me youve never gone between the two line's of car's. You are overtaking & undertaking in that situation.

Ahhh as you put it that way then yes i do filter between two lanes of stationary/slow moving traffic, the way i read it was that you filter up the near side of single lane traffic.

Question,

Is it illegal to use a cycle lane even lough its got the dotted line white line along side it, I gather you cant use the cycle lane when its got the double white lines.

And since my bike is taxed as a bycile then I think I should get away with it!

Have done that once or twice, very rarely as their isnt enough space for a pushbike usually, let alone a motorbike.

I only do that if the cars are stationary. When in france I saw a scooter nearly get barged into a chain-link fence doing this..... the car saw a bike passing on the outside, so he swerved over to the inside to give him room and nearly took the scooter (who was trying to go up the inside) clean out.... scooter boy did pretty well to miss him actually Very Happy

Not if the car driver infront of the road rage victim is one of those that block the gap down the middle Rolling Eyes
