After loosing 6 fish in two days I decided to set up the webcam taking a photo every 10 seconds for the day.

It was either going to be a cat or a heron. I wished it was going to be a cat as I’d be able to catch it and scare the shit out of it.

But, I’ve inherited a heron.

I know they're protected, so I shouldn't harm it, so any suggestions to get rid of the bugger? I'm blaming my dad as last week he bought a bird statue thingy.....

my brother made a frame from some roofing lat and then stretched some mesh over it, seems to put his heron off. Keeps the leaves out too.You can take ot off at weekend/evenings or when you want to have a look at the fish.

Do what farmers in the US do when they find protected species on their land, kill it, bury it and don't tell anyone. Thumbs Up

Or just get a nice cover like my nan did. Thumbs Up

Your problem is you have the wrong type of fish in your pond.

Some of these would soon sort out your problem

How big is the pond?

Protection smection, kill it if you can't be bothered to get a fake plastic heron.

Heron comes anywhere near my pond and valuable fish, I'll do my best to shoot it (so far missed)

The link I gave says doing this does the opposite. Though I'm not sure why, they're very territorial.

Quality pictures mate, very clever, next time set up some anti personal mines on a trip wire and get it on video.

Herons are fuckers. They absolutley raped my pond of some expensive fish.

I had several large expensive ghosties go, personally I would have thought they were big enough to put up a fight and some large sarassa red comets. Didn't touch my tench though probably because they are so bleady stealth.

We put a net over our pond in the end.

Still an inkling in my mind that they may have been stolen. British carp are expensive, anything over 20lbs is proabably worth over £1k. FIsh thefts does seem to be quite common.
