Similar to my set up, except my processor/mobo is not as good. Thumbs Up Have you got a graphics card cooler in there atall? It might help if you play bf2 and other system hogging games. This is pretty cheap and it one i use https://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=268543 Very Happy
Cant remember if your motheboard has a chipset fan like mine, if it does they used to be prone to failing in like 2 months or so. So listen for any odd noises coming from the chipset fan because mine stopped. Mad

Looking good, once you have built one its easy next time as you know what your doing. Was trying to convince a mate at work that its easy to figure out and if you build one the next one will be easy, but he wasn't convinced!

Not sure about XP home as its my most hated OS, how much more would it have been to go for XP pro version or 2k Pro? If there is a chance to take it back and swap it and pay a few extra quid for a different OS I would do it.

Also 120gb is quite small these days, you will fill it in no time if you download a lot of stuff.

What HD is it? SATA or IDE? If its IDE put it on a separate cable to the CD drive and set the pins on both drives to master. If you use and IDE drive on the same cable as a CD rom it will not run as fast as the CD drive will not be ATA 133 or even 100.

Good luck with the install of the OS, though its really easy so you shouldn't have any problems.

Good system mate.

If you want constructive criticism (very minor though) then I would have spent less on the case (Antec are very good cases though) and got 1GB of RAM just now and put the cash into a higher spec graphics card. Don't get me wrong the 6800 is VERY good... it's what I use.. but it would have given you a stronger system if you'd got a 7800 with 1GB of RAM and bought another 1GB later in the year.
Saying that though it's a VERY VERY VERY VERY minor point and the system is very good.
Well done on your first build mate. And remember a lot of people will read my suggestion and say I'm talking shite. A lot of it is down to personal preference.
Enjoy your new PC.

Nice. Great cases.

As an aside, I'd actually say the better case was a good choice, a good case will last you alot longer than a graphics card, it's worth the initial outlay to get something that will see you through a few builds.

Looking good goose, the software installing is the easy bit!!

Maybe think about partitioning the HDD now, cuz this is the time to do it.

I've got my 40gig partitioned in half. D:\ is for Mp3s etc, and it's good for when I want to format, I just put everything on D: and format the OS and everything else that is on C:

that big plastic monster blocking the view is a duct that brings air direct to the graphics card, there is a facility to mount an 80mm fan in the duct which i will probly do at some stage

there is also room for another 120mm fan at the front of the case to draw air in, so will probly put that in at some point

the motherboard is supposed to be fanless, you cant see it too well in the big, but there is a massive copper pipe thing running from the south bridge via big heatsinks all the way to the top left, im hoping this will be as good as they reckon it is

ive got two external drives where i store all my music, vids and docs both drives have identical stuff copied on to them so when one snuffs it, ive still got the other

the internal is just gonna be for the OS and games and apps

had 2k on a computer a few years ago, was the best OS as far as stability goes that i used, and was less cuddly than XP, but games support was always more of a pain in the arse than it needed to be, as for XP pro, i just wouldnt use the extra features, i dont play around with much clever stuff, tbh i'd sooner have the simpler OS

the HD is sata, and the DVD drive is on the Primary IDE channel as the master, hope it works ok like this

The security on XP home is pap, pro is slightly more secure, so if your bothered about that kind of thing its worth the extra couple of quid. I wouldn't use either version of XP as I reckon its windows for idiots as it has a crap interface and all the options are hidden or chosen for you with out even asking. I am using 2003 server at the mo and its like a better version of 2000 pro. Its possible to run games etc if you install direct x and enable hardware acceleration.

Similar to mine aswell but my processor and motherboard are better than the both of you.

Standard fans on my xfx 6800's work pretty darn well.

It does, I have the a8n-sli Deluxe version which has the onboard fan so i'm pretty sure he will.

Thanks for that advice although mines been running minimum 5 hours a night solid since october 20th and no weird noises, whether I'd hear them over two graphics fans, 4 hard drives, 1 120 mm fan, one 80 mm fan and the power supply fan I dunno :S but the chipset doesn't overheat so I'm not going to bother to open 'er up Smile.

2 gig is fine for todays games, many people when they build a new pc don't want to have to upgrade it 2 months later to play the latest games, having said that you have a point, the other side of the coin is he may have to upgrade graphics card sooner, just one of those decisions we have to make when building our own pcs really.

Agreed, building pc's is a piece of piss providing you buy quality hardware, buy cheap stuff like ebuyer extra value memory e.t.c and you end up spending ages replacing and repairing parts.

There is naff all difference between xp pro and XP home, only reason I run Xp pro at home is cause I like playing with active directory and windows domains and those in the know know you can't do this with home, very little differences between them really.

The fun will come in with the 7 different flavours of Vista but the chances of that being released in the near future are unlikely so I couldn't care less about it for now.

divuk83 wrote:

Debatable, but goose has already said in other threads that he has an external drive for his downloads so this 120 gig will be just for his programs... jesus a 40 gig drive would be enough, in fact, a 30 gig raptor would be enough storage and would give a performance increase but goose didn't want to spend that much on a disk.

Agreed, as I've said goose, if you need a hand though I don't live THAT far away from you... could always make you the first bcf'er I meet Smile

cagiva geezer, after you mentioned them, yes went for antec, the P180 specifically mainly based on the many happy customers on ebuyer, despite some power cable issues, figured if i went for antec power supply as well they should be compatible, and had no issues with any cable length whatsoever

appreciate all the comments and feedback as always peeps Thumbs Up

finished Very Happy

as far as software goes, my "how to build a pc" book listed loads of shit i needed to do

config hard drive
config optical drive
enable USB
config AGP video card
blah blah blah, enable this, disable that

ended up having to do nowt, motherboard did everything for me, recognised everything

so all i had to do was change boot order from floppy 1st to cd-rom drive first, and then installed XP

XP took about 40 mins, then did that stupid phone activation thing, and have 1 working pc, with all drivers installed

happy now Very Happy

Whilst there are a few differences, there is nothing a general home user would miss (EFS, Domain membership, IIS etc).

I have got the black P180 case, which is sweet, but have noticed the door at the front bows out slightly which is annoying.
The PSU being at the bottom is wierd too
