Hi guys, after much discussion (and a tiny bit of feuding Rolling Eyes ) with my parents I have bought a Rieju RS1 (for those of you who are not familiar with this bike it uses the same engine as the Aprilia RS50's but has a different frame) which I am picking up this sunday, I'm basically only going to use the bike locally and ride it to college and back (which is about 5 minutes away from my house) but my main worry at the moment is safety issues, I cannot go without a bike, I have been track riding for quite a while now (on various bikes) but I have 6 close biker friends who also ride bikes (all 50cc bikes, although mine will be one of the only two manuals in our little group) and all of them within having there bike for 6 months have all crashed (some had very minor crashes and others had there bikes written off and replaced). One of my friends was hit by a van and his bike was jammed into the front of it and since the van didn't have insurance it drove down the road dragging him along for a quarter mile until he fell off and watched the van drive off and hit two other cars in its hurry Shocked , it was later stopped by a Police car and caught and my friend was paid off a large sum, although this really doesn't make up for being dragged along on your moped. Would you say these crashes were just unlucky/ the product of dangerous riding or is this common among Moped riders/ riders on a whole? what was your experience like on your first bike? because it is beginning to worry me, thanks...

Been riding for a year now every day on mixed roads in all weathers.

Dropped the bike ones in a car park, couple of close shaves that I avoided by staying calm.

On the road for nearly 4 years without an accident.

If you ride on the road like you do on a track, I give you a week, maybe two.

I'm 24 and have been riding since I was 16.
I started off on a 50cc scooter and within 2 weeks I had a serious injury that put me in hospital for quite along time also I was in plaster for nearly a year on my leg Crying or Very sad but at the end of the day I was unlucky as it was the blokes fault and after a few years I got a £10k payout Mr. GreenThumbs Up which was nice but well deserved due to pain etc.
I reckon if I was on a faster bike I could of accelerated out of the blokes way but being on a 50cc I probably could run faster Laughing

Since then I've only had a small bump where some bloke went in to the back of me, but no injuries and no damage so all good.

My advice would be if your 17 get 125cc. Also just make sure you have the correct gear. Thumbs Up

I never had any problems with other road users when I had my first bike.

It's always hard to start out on a bike that wont go more than 40mph, as you have to thrash it just to get moving at the same speed as all the other cars etc...

Just take it easy, dont go mad and dont take risks.

When you have a bike with power, you can get out of sticky situations alot easier. With a 50 your always a max with nothing in reserve! Confused

Thumbs Up

I have only been riding 5 weeks but havent had a crash, my uncle has ridden since the 80s without a crash (but he is a fair weather rider although he wont admit it), sometimes crashes are unavoidable but treat everyone like an idiot and it will help a great deal.

Mine will be the 'Evolution' model which also is apparently 1 bhp more powerful than the normal one, lol to be honest I am a 'petrol-head' and cannot wait to get riding, and I intend to be as careful as possible, one more question I have is that the RS1 I am buying has a Metrakit sports pipe and sports air-filter fitted with it but the guy will also supply all the original parts aswell, do you think I should stay on the safe side and put all the original parts back on the bike or risk keeping the sports parts on? thanks...

Sounds like you hang around with some muppets. Sure you can always be taken out by other peoples mistakes but 6/6 within 6 months seems rather over the top. Ride like a twat straight away=accident. Learn when to ride like a twat and when not to=relatively good odds Smile I've been riding 7months now with nothing that can be classed as an accident so far. Just be sure to focus your mind whilst riding. Try not to let your mind drift to other things (blonde+short skirt etc Razz ) and learn to ride defensively factoring other peoples potential mistakes into your forward planning. Try and keep the odds in your favour! Good luck.

Best advice ever. There seems to be a twit-field generator built into every BMW turning their drivers into instant... not so nice people. When two lanes join they will always try to push ahead of you, and they always go for an overtake. (rant over).

Crashed within a month of owning it; entirely my own fault, however Confused.

As long as you are careful you ride sensibly you should be ok. iv been riding for 6 months and had no accidents, apart from dropping the bike once on ice. Even if its only 5 mins ride always wear a bike jacket and gloves, dont be one of these people who just ride round in a hoodie. Its normally the day you go without your gear you have a accident.
