Help! My cat has started destroying random stuff in my house! How do i make him stop it?

I now have to hide the kitchen roll, egg box, brillo pads, washing up sponge, cardboard boxes, and anything else he happens to find remotely fun to rip to shreds. He's more like a mouse than a cat at the moment? Shocked

He's been castrated and it didn't even phase him Laughing, and the 'squirt him with a water pistol when he's naughty' thing doesn't work because he loves water?!

My cat likes playing with things, and now the network cable which connects my laptop to the internet wont stay in cos my cat had fun pouncing on it and pulling it out of the socket which snapped off the little plastic bit that holds it on. And its the bit inside the computer, not on the cable so I can't replace it! Laughing Little bugger! So cute though!

maybe get him a scratching post, and play with him by holding stuff that you get him to attack

or better still, get some of the live white mice from the pet shop that they feed to snakes

anothing thing to tire him out, is a laser pointer, you can get them from pound shops etc

you point the light beam onto the floor, and move it around and he will chase it for ages

he needs an outlet for his hunting killing instincts

its fun to play with him, too

Im guessing he is still a year old or less. they tend to calm down a bit when they get older.

Is he allowed out ? If not he's probably going stir crazy, and maybe you should allow him out sometimes.

You can get 'Pet Training' spray from all good pet shops - this should solve some of the problem.

Other than that there isn't alot you can do - if under a year they're usually all crazy, my mums cat Badger was constantly crazy up until recently.

As Colin suggested theres lots of things you can do to play with the cat, however theres no substitute for just letting them outside. My cat Max is a holly terror when hes left house bound.

Sounds like my little cat Felix. He's an absolute lunatic, runs around the house clawing the shit out of anything he can get at. I think the best thing to do is start letting him out if he isn't already. Ours has been out a few times but my GF has stopped that because she's pregnant now and she's scared stiff of Toxoplasmosis (I know it's rare but you have no idea how much she worries). We're going to get his bollox done soon so hopefully that'll calm him down a bit, and then we'll let him out again.

Failing that give him a little slap when he does it, maybe he'll associate it with not getting what he wants, or that he's doing something naughty.

Get what you want him to play with and spray it with cat nip.

Everything else just gets forgotten then!

Punch the f*ck out of it. Hourly. For the rest of it's life.

Oh and shave it.

Hmm... destroying a brillo pad doesn't constitute getting shagged with a strap on in my opinion Laughing Laughing

By the sounds of it i think i need to let him out more. He has an abundance of scratching posts, laser pens, catnip, toys, gadgets and god knows what else.

He's only 9 months old, and technically a kitten still, so i've been keeping him in all the time i've had him. He's in all day when i'm at work, i let him out in the garden when i get in at 5, but he comes back in at night.

I don't like letting him out to roam as he pleases because the last 2 times i let him out he didnt come back and got ill from it, and the third time he got stuck up a tree for 5 hours! He worries me!!

How can i train him to come back when i let him out?

Cat flap.

Cats like to walk around and see their friends by day, they will piss off for days on end on hunting trips and come home hungry.
And getting stuck up a tree is just to piss you off, as soon as you climb up it to get them down they run back down again.

I've been hiding the kitchen roll for years, you get used to it.

yes cat flap

in my case, they use the kitchen window and have learnt to open it themselves if its not latched shut

this is handy as i dont have a backdoor other than a patio door.

if you have a normal back door, installing a cat flap is easy

2 of my cats are 12months old and they have been coming and going as they please for ages now. i think its just the first 3 weeks that you arent supposed to let them out.

he will be protected if you shut him up at home, but its not much of a life for a cat.

i have two cats and the go bonkers sometimes and do laps of the house and back flips up walls. they usually go mad first thing in morning or at dusk, these are hunting times for cats and indoor cats will hunt anything they can find including tearing to pieces silly things. its hilerious though. both my cats get angry if you go near them in this mood and claw the carpet when they are annoyed so that may be the reason. your cat sounds frustrated. get some cat nip its fun watching them take loo laas lol
