Does anyone use this?

I may get my dad to get it. We have a 2meg connection over 3 pc's and i download quite a lot so its sometimes slow.

Seen this advertised quite a bit and apparently you can increase the speed by 5 times. Probably though compression software but is it actually any good??

It's all bollocks.

You can't get more than 2 meg from a 2 meg connection! It's like trying to turn a fiver into a fifty.

It's all about compression, which seems to make sense. It has won loads and loads of awards from magazines and stuff and is only £25 a year.

As you cannot physically change the speed of your Internet connection, ONSPEED uses a technology called Content Sensitive Compression ('CSC') to individually compress each element of a web page or email using various compression algorithms based on a patent approved proprietary technology. The end result is that your web pages and emails (PC only) load and download faster using your existing Internet connection.

When your web browser requests a web page, the ONSPEED software redirects that request to the ONSPEED compression servers. They take the respective web page content, compress it and send it back down to the ONSPEED software which decompresses it and sends it to the browser requesting the information.

ONSPEED offers a unique, patented technology called “Advanced Imaging”, enabling you to receive fully viewable and instantly usable web pages, while maintaining the maximum quality of images. Advanced Imaging delivers all images on a page simultaneously. You continue to browse web pages while images are being progressively loaded. Image quality progressively improves until images have reached lossless quality.

ONSPEED’s dedicated algorithms compress the following elements:

Text
HTML objects
Photo-realistic images (e.g. Compressed and uncompressed JPEG, PNG, Compressed and uncompressed GIF, and BMP)
Line art and drawings (e.g. GIF, BMP)
Animated objects (GIF)
Office documents (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
Macromedia Flash

If a web page or email contains information that is not covered by a dedicated algorithm, ONSPEED will apply a generic compression algorithm to that data element.

Seems to be per pc though.

Unless your ISP uses it you gain nothing, how is your PC going to compress a web page it hasnt got yet??

And if they think yhey can compress jpg's and gif's good luck to them.

Not quite true... I can't speak for compressing of jpg's and gif's mind.

For one it won't speed up dynamic websites such as online bulliten boards like this here forum as the only way it speeds up a webpage is by them downloading at the speed of light, zipping it up, sending you a compressed file then your pc uncompressing it, dynamic contect changes to much for them to be able to cache it, it will only speed up the loading of images the first time you load them as any other times the images get cached in your browsers static content cache (temporary internet files if you use IE).

I can't see how they would be caching things such as torrents as they'd have to download them, cache them and then send them to you, most of the time i can't max my connection out on torrents anyway so tis pointless.

Use DAP or Reget for your downloads. If the server permits, it will establish x number of connections, each downloading a chunk of the file at the same time.

I'm on 10Mbit, and can download from websites at ~1.2MB/s, while using IE/Mozilla will only manage 300-400KB/s.

Give it a try, if you don't mind the Spyware of course. Rolling Eyes

I'm guessing you download stuff using Bit Torrent or similar and so ONSPEED will do fuck all. Smile

One other advantage is that ONSPEED would then get to monitor everything you look at on the internet.

Nice! Thumbs Up

So let me get this right

Using Onspeed
1. Your PC requests a webpage from onspeeds server.
2. Onspeeds server downloads the page.
3. Onspeeds server compresses the page.
4. your pc downloads the compressed page
5. your pc uncompresses the page and passes it to explorer

Not using Onspeed

1. your pc requests a webpage from the server hosting.
2. your pc downloads webpage and displays it in explorer.

Looks too much like hard work to me and will possibly double maybe double possibly quadruple the number off hops required to get the page you need.

If the page was massive, it might be quicker.

If you had LOADS of people on your network, it might be quicker.

If you're Joe Average, browsing normally, it'll make fuck all difference.
