Hello all. Having just recently been told I might get all my savings in one lump sum I'm wanting to blow (some of) it on a nice new(ish) motorbike and am having all sorts of trouble finding one. I know this is a question that comes up a fair bit and possibly a fairly definitive guide would be good. Phantomtek has the CBT end covered and people that have done DAS have free choice of any bike they want but is little'uns on a 33bhp license that don't want to break the law need some sort of guidance.

So here in this thread we should all put our heads together and I'll then hopefully amalgamate the results into a useful thread.

Looking for:
suitable bike with picture
some info
pros
cons
rough idea of cost

I'll start with the SV650(s)
https://www.suzuki-moto.pl/strony/salon2005/street/sv650s/photo-main.jpg
V twin engine, around 70bhp derestricted, compromise of sports and utility. Available curvy (carbed) and pointy (injected)

pros: fairly good all round bike, restriction won't destroy power, suzy parts fairly easy to come by, good for a daily ride

cons: mediocre build quality (prone to rust and corrosion), stupid problems like front spark plug getting wet fairly easily. by compromising it excels at nothing.

new:
naked: £4399
faired: £4599

2000 model
~naked: £1700
~faired: £1900

please correct me if I'm wrong because I don't own the bike but I've been doing lots of research. Please add more bikes! Smile

Yamaha XJ600 S (Diversion)

https://www.horus.com/~dune/img/vehicle/diversion.gif

Around 57bhp de-restricted if I remember correctly...

Pros: Renowned for being extremely reliable, certainly a bike that I'd put money on if it were doing a non-stop round the world trip. Handles pillions and cargo very well, and personally I love the 4-2 exhaust Very Happy

Cons: As far as 600cc machines go, the Diversion is slow. It still packs a punch of course - it's a bike after all, and you won't be disappointed moving up to it from a 125, but you will find yourself yearning to take that restriction out after a few weeks.

New: n/a

Used: Not expensive. I picked up a '96 Diversion in perfect condition from our resident Vee for just one grand Smile

Overall, I would call the Diversion the choice bike for the sensible rider.
