What would you need to do to a modern 1000cc sports bike to hit the 200mph mark?

That's it's restriction, may do more derestricted - though what the real speed is I don't know. Same for the GSXR.

new fireblades can do 180 standard.(i guess anyway, there is a section in a magazine of a noob going 180mph in a day) few mapping tweaks and longer gearing im sure it could hit 200. maybe little more.

I think most have the power to do it, but not the gearing. They are after all designed for acceloration rather than top speed.

A brand new GSXR1000 with power commander, K&N, race can altered gearing and a long enough run up would get bloody close.

Fiddle inside the engine and they should do it with ease just like the WSB's do

Bike said the MV F4 Tamburini (spelling?) might be good for 190mph - not sure if it's got the voluntary 186mph restriction?

Aerodynamics plays a big part at these speeds - not sure how much quicker the diminutive litre sportsbikes would go - the HM Plant Hondas managed a touch over 200mph at the North West and they're packing a fair bit more power than stock.

Hi

Power isn't the problem. Poor aerodynamics is the problem. Mr C has managed to get around 200mph from his ZX12R, and that is with just short of 190hp, which is within sight for a litre sports bike with some serious work. However a ZX12R has far better aerodynamics.

All the best

Keith

Relatively speaking, not sure - it's difficult to encompass both rider and bike. I think the latest sportsbikes (with rider) have similar drag coefficents to the average family saloon.

I heard its more like a van, and Im inclined to believe it.

After all, my bike has a power:weight ratio equivelant to a family car (1500kgs) having 450bhp. Yet my bike only does 120mph, so surely the car must be more aerodynamic...

Bikes cant be that aerodynamic afaik, otherwise they would not go round corners.

I would have said that with the appropriate alteration to the gearing, cracking 200mph should be possible on a 1000cc sportsbike without suffering from aerodynamic problems. This is assuming the ride has the capability and nerve to manage to stay on the machine at that kind of speed.

Hi

Quick look shows that the coefficient of drag for the ZX12R is 0.603 for the 12R and 0.561 for the Hayabusa.

For comparison the BMW M3 has a coefficient of drag of 0.33.

As you can see, bikes are pathetic for aerodynamics.

All the best

Keith
