Thought this was quite interesting taken from this months Bike magazine.

''The contentious Third Directive Licensing law has been passed in the European parliament and is being labelled as the kiss of death for the bike industry.

The nonsensical new legislation will force 17 year olds to ride 15bhp 125s until they are 19, when they will then be able to ride 47bhp bikes for another two years before a full license can be gained.

Direct access age shifts from 21 to 24''.

When is this likely to happen? Any opinions?

Yeah course,

The law aint been brought into affect yet.

It will only affect people who take their test after the date it is brought in.

You have your liscence - thats yours. They cant take it off ya.

Its like the old categories you use to get with a car test... With a car pass, you would also get a motorcycle category and a shed load of others. And with a bike test, you would get a 3 wheeler category etc...

Those liscences are still valid 100%, but if you try and send them off for a new photocard liscence, you might find the DVLA accidently manage somehow to "loose" a few categories on the switch over Wink

I think this law is just another attempt to destroy the future of biking - if people can't get powerful bikes till they are 24 but are allowed to drive any car they like at 17, more and more people will get powerful cars rather than bikes

That still wont put off the hard-core of riders thou, so biking will survive, until they decide something else to try and discourage people from this "dangerous past-time"

People who dont understand or have never riden a bike, should not decide the futures of people who have

Making there less bikers in the future to protest there more restrictive laws that they will try and impose on all of us. Thumbs Down

I personally think it's done so that youths in london can train for the 2012 olympics as opposed to riding a bike thereby reducing the risk of obesity! Cool. As a result, you will see more 17 year olds participating in the olympics purely because they can perform much better than whatever bike they're riding.

I personally think sod the E.U. I like the system we have now, but the suggestion of the DAS age being increased is OK. Snipping off the bollocks of a 17 year old by restricting him onto a 125 for 2 years will be an utter pain in the arse and what are the chances that by that stage most bikes will be artifically capped to 15bhp? By then, 2-strokes will have probably been outlawed and 4 strokes probably won't get any more powerful.

Why is there no restriction on cars!?

A 17 year old can pass his test and get behind the wheel of a 7993cc Bugatti Veyron but not a 126cc bike. Middle Finger Evil or Very Mad Middle Finger

Why don't they just bubble wrap us when we're born and keep us in rubber rooms.

That's gotta be the CRAPPEST argument i've ever heard, how many 17 year olds will ever drive a Veyron?

Well, maybe in like 300 years when cars with wheels on the ground are a thing of the past and the Veyron will be the slowest vehicle around...yeh.

But untill that time, not gonna happen. If that law's not being bought in for another 6 years i'd better get a move on. Do my CBT and whatever else i can at 17 and then do my DAS when i'm 21 Razz

Because 17 year olds don't do that, while some do buy bikes that offer straight line performance figures that aren't far off.

Insurance is the massive 'restriction' for teenagers buying cars, meaning that a much, much smaller number can afford a fast car when they are 17.
