Erm, if you mean by 'planet', 'sun' - then they do. It's just that they take a long time to do it because there's so much stuff to get through.
I believe red stars are older stars that have expanded as they have got less dense thanks to burning off a lot of their mass.
The 'burning' reaction is nuclear fusion:

I reckon God got all the play-dough out of the shop for his homework and made big, satisifying stuff. like everyone likes really big stuff.
but then it got to crunch time and he's like 'shit, haven't done me homework yet..better crack it out'
