I building up a second system for someone out of all the spare parts I've got lying around.
All was going well untill I dropped a Nvidia Geforce 4 MX 440 128MB card into it.

At any screen res above 800x600 It blurs on screen fonts to the point it's hurting your eyes after 30 minutes.
If I turn the refresh rate down to 60hz I can use 1152x864 without the blurring, but I get the dreaded flicker which is twice as bad.

I've tried the latest drivers (and the 2 before). Same thing!

Any suggestions (please, mine eyes can't take it any more)

Thanks
J

One of two things:

1) Your card is F**ked

2) Your using the wrong drivers

You said youve tried many drivers? There is only one driver for your card and its the same driver that all geforce cards use. Make sure your downloading it from www.nvidia.com, Infact

https://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_84.21.html

Thats the right one, Make sure you uninstall any drivers thats on your system now, Reboot then install the new ones, reboot again and it should be fixed. If not, then the card is buggered

Thanks, I think the card may be shot.

As for the drivers, I was indeed referring to the forceware drivers that cover all geforce cards.
You can download all previous versions from Nvidia as well as the current release.
I've tried several (no joy).

switch the card out with another g/card that way you'll at least be able ensure that Its not the motherboard or connections to your monitor or its not the software you have on your machine

its a good way of eliminating possible issues before shelling out for a new gcard.

Are you running Windows XP? There's all kinds of problems with modern video cards operating at over 60Hz, for which I'm pretty sure there is a patch.

Done it already swapped for an old 32MB hercules.... It's definitely the card not the mobo.

Tell me about it, it's fine (not blurred) at 60Hz, but the flickering is toooooo painful on the old retinas. I can't give that to someone.

yes, and it's still blurred.

I'm hoping it could be a driver/win XP issue as these and the card are the only things common to both systems.

Have you tried using 1024x768 @ the highest refresh rate you get away with. Probably 85Hz?

That works ok but over the past year I've got used to 1152x864 (on a 19") and 1400x1050 (on a 21").

For me, 1024x768 would be like you using 640x480.

Thanks for the thought all the same. Thumbs Up

I'm not surprised!

My 21'' monitor operates at 1280x1024, and that's probably the equivalent of 1024x768 on a 17''.

I think this card must be on it's last legs. I've found an old ATi Radeon 9200 128MB in the loft though so that should do the trick.

Thanks. Thumbs Up

for the record i skipped past almost all of this thread other than about the first few posts, i prefer ATI for one... i also prefer newer and faster tech (and yet the only reason y im still stuck on my 1,768mb ram, ati 9800pro atlantise is because im poooor as hell, should get a new 1 sometime soon i spose even tho i get good fps in bf2... the geforce is prob screwed as anything wrong with the graphics or blurred/distorted graphics (most the time in games) or for example i was see'ing florescent colours in cs 1.6 when my allinwonder overheated and fried partly...
