Can I just plug it in and go? I've just bought a new server with a 20gig HDD in it that I don't need, so I'm gonna jam it in my desktop.

Should have windows 2000 on it but it shouldn't boot from that HDD, so I assume I can format it from within windows XP?

If it's IDE you should set the jumper to slave... if it's sata just make sure that your windows xp disk is your primary... sorted Smile.

Plug it in but make sure the jumper for the new HDD is set to "slave" and the HDD with XP on set to "master" Then when you boot up go to my computer and the new HDD should be there (next to C drive) right click and press format, when done you sould be able to use it as extra storage Very Happy

Hope this helps

hi there. get the hard drive in your hands with the power board at the bottom (with the label on top) get a jumper, if you dont know what they are its a small clip type thing that slots over 2 pins

Now, put it on so it looks like this

: [:] : :

Do the same do BOTH hard drives, plug your master (the one its gonna boot to) at the end of the cable, and your new one on the middle connecter of the IDE cable

Then, once your booted up and its hopefully picked up the new drive (can sometimes take over a minute to even pick it up)

Go into "My Computer" where you should see the new drive
Right click it and select "format" You might want to do a quick format, this is fine if the drive is newish

You can then rename it to whatever you wish, eg: "Storage"

Have fun Very Happy

What a load of shite... the jumper position depends entirley on the manufacturer of the hard drive...

Beat me to it, some need no pin to be master and some need no pin for cable select,

It will say on the label which is which or it might have:
M for master
S for slave
CS for cable select
and can't remember last one/if there is one
Engraved above each 2 pins

Holy crap, thank you all for lots of the same answer.

I hope it'll realise it's a permanant drive and not give it a letter such as J: Because I've got cameras and things plugged in that take it up to I: at the moment.

But yes, I know what to do with jumpers, hadn't thought of that though. TY.
