krebsy - did those gaskets look like they were made of a softish metal, that might kinda crush if you put enough pressure on them . I'd bet at least a small part of my shirt that your heat-related ticking is the exhaust blowing at the joint.
Try turning the studs out of the engine block a few of threads to get you going - but make sure you get them back to where they started before you finish up.

Well,
My Divvy suffered from the usual bottom collector rotting syndrome that affects all Divvy's and I had a pair of splits in the downpipes just beyond to collectors. The performance of the bike was suffering due to this (not to mention the niose) and I had patched it up repeatedly with putty and hose clips but it eventually just went.
A 4 to 1 system really is the best option IMHO. I was going to just swap the downpipes for 150 quid but figured that if the rear sections were dodgy then it would've been another 300+ quid for those. £350 all in for the complete system seemed to be the best option.
Was a pain to fit as the old system had been on for 30k miles and most of the bolts/nuts had rusted. I managed to hammer some sockets onto them and get them all undone but the studs would not budge from the engine. I'm loathed to drill those out and replace them as it would be too much work for me to do.
The new system was fitted (after re-cutting the threads on the bolts) with all the old nuts and after tightening it up it seems to be ok. I think the ticking is probably valve clearances and I'll check that out when I take the cover off to replace the gasket (which seems to be seeping a tiny bit of oil from time to time).
The system I put on was a Motad/Nexxus 4 to 1. Shop around, you can get it for 350 quid. The mid-range feels a lot better since putting it on but I think the carbs still need tuning to get a bit more welly out of the engine (Which will get me up to 100 before the acceleration rate drops off).
One benefit of the new pipes is that I can get at the oil filter without any problems. Previously it was an absolute pain to change the filter as there was no space to work in.
Downsides? The breather pipe (which dribbles oil from time to time on Divvys) had to be moved or it would've rested on the new rear section and either covered it in crud or melted. the tube now drops straight down so I have to use a drip tray if the bike is on the centre stand to avaoid getting oil on the tyres. Also, you may need to put a spacer (i.e. a thick washer) in when you fit the rear. On mine, the rear brake pedal was catching as the indent for it on the pipe was not lined up fully. That was fixed with a fat washer or two on the rear mount. I can still lock up the rear without the full travel of the pedal anyway, so I'm not too worried.
Set aside a weekend to get it done.
Here are some pics. (Note the GSX-R 1000 in black in the background.... )

Got it back from the garage today, split in gasket- they sealed that up, brake pads needed replacing, some bolt was loose- anyway ticking seems to be gone and it got a bit of a service(brake fluid oil filter, yet to see if it still struggles at top end, if it does im pondering over takin the restictors out and just bein careful, it seems to idle at around1700 rpm which is a bit higher and effects pullin off so its a bit pokier all in all it should be ok for this trip thanks for the help (not bad for 118 quid) |
