People

Who's insured a cat c / d write off in the past? Did the insurance company care? Did it cost you more than a non-written off vehicle?

Got a lead on a cat c car but I'm not interested if it'll cost me a packet to insure. Yes, I could phone my insurers and ask but they won't be open til tomorrow and I'm curious now.

Ta.

Don't think I've ever been asked if it's a vehicle's a write off?

I'd presume it shows up when they ask the reg number?

Or am I giving insurance companies far too much credit for being thorough?

I have a cat D bike. It never occurred to me to inform my insurer, they never asked so i dont think they care.

cat D is just cosmetic damage, so it doesnt effect my insurance. I cant think why it would.

I think cat C is just cosmetic damage that is a bit more serious.

One thing I wd say tho, is check it actually is cheaper. I got a good price on my bike, but not as much of a bargain as I had thought as I have seen non cat D bikes go for similar to what I paid since.

Here a little guide

CATEGORY A = Must not be resold. severely damaged and with no serviceable parts. DVLA require 'notification of destruction required'

CATEGORY B = Not to be resold, Damaged beyond economical repair 'notification of destruction required', but serviceable parts can be resold

CATEGORY C = Repairable salvage. Usually older bikes where repairs cost more than their value.

CATEGORY D = Repairable salvage, minimal damage, but the insurer doesnt want to repair it, even if its economical to do so, Often stolen/recovered machines and rare bikes, parallel imports where getting new parts is tricky.

Hope this helps out a bit.[/b]

Ive had a number of write offs in the past (not forgetting my old man is a body repair man) and never had any problems or loaded insurance.

Like G never been asked if it was a write off etc.

When we do car hpi checks in work it shows up on there if it's been seached by an insurer so at least some companies do check them.
I wouldn't have thought they would charge you more to insure it but they won't payout full value if it was written off again.

Cool - that wouldn't worry me anyway as I tend to only TPO my cars, they're not worth enough to be claiming anything.

Thumbs Up
