Well some advice please Smile

I live in Northern Ireland where there is one bike test and as far as I know its just called "Full (UK) Motorcycle Licence"

Now, you guys have CBT, A1, A2 DAS and all this crap

What I want to know is; Is my licence equivalent to the DAS, or if not which is it? Im guessing that because I passed here in Northern Ireland my full licence is valid anywhere in the UK and im not going to go over to scotland/england on my bike and get pulled only to find out....

Hi Jamie
Yeah your licence is valid over here,

The only difference any of it would make for you is if you had a ban at some point and had moved to the uk, The dvla dont keep records of NI licences so you would either have to return to ireland to apply to get it back of apply for a uk provisional and go through our system of cbt ect. (but it would be a clean licence here)

My ex had his licence from NI but was banned while over there, when he came here and tried to get it reinstated we found out he had to either go back to NI and apply for it there with points on it, or he could apply for a UK provisional and start again but with a clean licence. Ins wise its still best to advise them as if you eve have accident or other problems they will laugh in your face if they find out you never disclosed details. Even though NI is part of the Uk like I said the DVLA dont keep records, Your NI licence is valid though. Just dont loose it.

Is NI not in the UK? It's strange how the law is different even though it's the same government. I would have though a UK licence was exactly the same in NI, including A1, A2 etc.

We dont take a cbt, once your 17 and have a provisional driving licence you can drive up to a 125cc, Once you do the bike test (theres just one) then you can have up to 33bhp for 1 year then whatever you want Mr. Green

I do agree tho, its strange

I'd love to see some accident figures between NI and England to see if all the tests are actually worth it

Would be interesting to see if someone from the rest of the UK could come here just to do their test then go home again? Would save alot of money on all those tests yous do Razz Razz And you could get a big bike right away, Also the roads and junctions and other shit are generally simpler here so that would help some people

same as criminal records

during a trip sometime ago. a few buddys wrecked a hotel room, (excluding me, but i got in trouble anyway lol), the copper told us that records would be held in england, scotland and wales. but it wouldn't show up in NI. which was handy for a court dodging mate

I dont know why the DVLA dont keep records of NI licences, we were shocked over it to. But its true. They had no record of my ex's licence or ban so offered him a fresh uk one all squeeky clean.

edit......and im the rotten sod who made him admit to the ban to the insurance company anyway lol

No I don´t envy you Northern Ireland´s, I visited during the troubles, i´ve never been as frightend.

My mate got arrested for taking photos of police patrols.

We walked down all the Loyalist & Unionist areas of Belfast, I was lucky as I was english, but was with loads of french mates so spoke french, in unionist areas I just said I was from Yorkshire, in loyalist areas, I had id from college in the republic.

But no, it was dodgy, we had to get off the bus from Dublin before the border and change it for one with Northern plates, so we wouldn´t get stoned in protestant areas.

most of that is long gone, you'll still get small areas that try and riot , but the rest of the place is fine.

so.. when I turn 17 I could go to NI and do my test there, then come back - wait a year and go onto any power?

Or would I have to spend the restriction period in NI?

I didnt know it was 2 years. So thats a year on your 'R' plates with 33bhp, then another year with 33bhp with no 'R' plates?

I'm not sure what R plates are, but you dont need them. The restriction works the same as over here - 2 years not over 33bhp. So going to NI for your test is pointless as it works exactly the same. There is no DAS though, so if your over 21 you still have to be restricted for 2 years.
