Hey Everyone, I got my Honda NSR125 about 4 months ago, and after having a complete blast last couple of weeks, my back brake is squeaking like a b*tch! I know its probably a very simple problem to fix, but would like your advice..whats the best way to fix the horrible screech? Smile

Also, Could somebody suggest the best anti-rust oils for the chain, nuts and bolts, brake pads etc..

Greatly Appreciated!

Dark

for the brakes check that there is enough pad left on them. if there is the brakes are squeaking as they have dirt behind the pads. you need to clean the back of the pads + pistons and apply some fresh copper grease to the rear of the pads
as for potection a lot of people recommend scottoiler FS 365 Protector Spray, though i have never used it.

You do like danger, don't you?! A complete spanner virgin fiddling with brakes sounds llike a bad idea to me.

Just make sure you're going slow when you find out whether they still work after you put them back together without the little widget that doesn't seem to fit anywhere Wink

As for chain lube, there are loads of spray lubes to choose from (I think Halfords do a few, if you don't know where to start). I used to use Castrol chain wax, it's white and waxy so it tends to be easier to see where you've sprayed it and flings off less.
Having said that, I've started using gear oil (plain normal car gear oil) it's thicker than engine oil, cheaper than chainlube, and easier to clean off when it ends up on your back wheel. Thumbs Up

Hehe..Well i would rather do something about my brakes before im riding on the north circular at 50mph and find my brakes fail me, mind you i have thought out a cool scenario to get out of that situation Very Happy

Do you reckon i should play it safe and expensive and go to a mechanic to check me bike out? Or do you suggest i should get my brothers toolkit and find some online manuals to take the brakes apart? Everyone needs to start somewhere Wink

I'll go to Halfords next week to see what they have..BUT what do i do about the nut and bolts? They are becoming real rusty! and its not a pretty sight, especially on the fairings.

Thanks sooo much!

Unfortunately, the best way to keep your nuts shiny is to keep your bike in a garage.

Giving it a good wash and polish will help, try Motorex protect & shine (or the scottoiler stuff WhiteNoise suggested)

The squeeky brakes shouldn't be too hard to fix, I doubt you'll need to do much more than take out the pads and coppergrease the back. So if you've got a workshop manual, and you pay attention to how everything comes apart, you can't go far wrong.

Make sure you watch for pingfuckits!

Yeah..unfortunately my bike sits proudly outside my block of flats. Darn..its been pissing down all week! Terrible weather to drive!

I will go and buy some Motorex, which i hope Halfords sell..and other oils.

Some of the nuts on the fairings and underneath the speedometer, look like they need replacing, i know its probably a stupid question..but do i ave to go to a bike mechanic to get those bolts?

And i gotta know this..what is pingfuckits??? Very Happy

Is it a perforated disc?
Drill the build-up of rust and brake dust from all the wee holes using a drill bit that fits tight.

(But not so tight as to make the holes bigger.)

And check all the anchoring/mounting bolts are secure.

Same on the front too.

They are the little things that start out under tension, then after you undo a screw end up under a large immovable object Mad

So called because of the noise somebody standing nearby hears Wink

When you want to replace nuts and bolts, you need to find an old fashioned hardware shop. The sort where they have lots of little plastic boxes of assorted shiny things, which they will happily sell individually after rummaging through to find the right one.
Poxy blister packs of 10 bolts that you can't check if they match thread on the one you've got in your pocket are no bloody good to anyone.
