Heya, just a quick question.

Are you alloud to filter ( ride on ) these road markings? Im more on about the big wide ones, like what you see when your exiting a junction on the motorway.

Thanks.

but.........

109: Areas of white diagonal stripes or chevrons painted on the road. These are to separate traffic lanes or to protect traffic turning right.

If the area is bordered by a broken white line, you should not enter the area unless it is necessary and you can see that it is safe to do so.
If the area is marked with diagonal stripes and bordered by solid white lines, you should not enter it except in an emergency.
If the area is marked with chevrons and bordered by solid white lines you MUST NOT enter it except in an emergency.

I use those all the time, we have loads around Southampton and, as the message above says, you should not use them unless it is necessary and safe to do so, which it is and is - every time Mr. Green

I asked a bike copper this question at a BSB meeting not long ago. He said as long as it is safe to do so.

I'd have thought no techinically as they arn't supposed to be entered,

it the white line is solid, deffor a no no,

but I'd do it anyway as long as the traffic is slow/stationary, keeping an eye on all pedestrians and potential hazards and junctions.

If a copper was coming other way and the gap was small, I think I'd leave it and just sit there.

On normal roads and motorway entry slip roads i use them without thinking. But on motorway exits it's a bit dodgy and could get you a staring role in police camera action.

The old bill don't seem to mind filtering around norwich.

I was a bit dubious earlier but in a hurry, and filtered past a focus police car, and as i was approaching, he moved out of the way Thumbs Up Very Happy

If the area of hatching has a solid line around it you shouldn't go in unless (perhaps) overtaking something very slow or stationary.

A broken line you can cross but use caution because the area is so marked for a reason and others may not expect you to be there.

My manouvers, lines, filering and overtakes are dictated entirely by road conditions and traffic, what's been painted on the road does not come into consideration unless there's a police car right behind me.

The road markings are designed for cars, not bikes.

Yes. The lines are not solid but broken which means you are allowed to ride on or in them.

On a motorway slip i would be very supprised if the line werent solid, on a roads with markings like that i use it as a bike lane. Just watch out for the other biker doing the same coming the other way. Thumbs Up

you are allowed to enter them to pass stationary traffic so youcan pass anything that is travelling at less than 10mph i believe. I think mostly you should use common sense like most things on th road. Sometimes it will be appropriate, other times it wont.
