Hey, im thinking of changing my tyres when i get back.
I have a cbr 600, its a 1996 (and im not certain of tyres sizes as i cant find them on the web and im not at home with the bike) and i currently have some serious economy macadams on it (65 quid for the pair, delivered).
I strongly believe my lowside was caused by them, and they have very little cornering confidence.
So i want to get some better tyres that generally grip better, give me confidence and will help the bike handle better.
Problem is, im prone to lots of 0-60 testing, wheelies and im hoping to downgear. Plus i might be doing a few trips to kings lynn (about 100 miles from me) over summer.
So i dont want the latest super sticky diablo corsa lamborghini bollocks. Especially since i havent got a great deal of money to throw at them. About 200 for the pair fitted is about it, so about £170 on the tyres.
Race scrubs will certainly do, but again im not sure where to get them from. ____________________ China traffic/travel bike vid - When I make a sweeping statement, please add the word 'statistically' in to the sentence before you bitch...

BT45s work well on my old CBR6 - maybe worth a look as a sport/touring tyre and they do grip well |

Don,t think they do a BT45 big enough for a 96 CBR600?
What about a bt014 on the front for stickyness which will last 2x longer than the rear any way and a bt020 on the back for longer life. ____________________ Past:NRG50,AF1125(x2),NSR125RR,ZZR250,CX500,VFR400,KR1S,ZZR600(x2),CB400N,YZF1000(x2),KH125,Z200,FX400R,CBR954RR(x2)GPZ500S,GT550,VFR750F(x2),RD350N,XR650R,CBR600F,CB250,KDX250,YZF750R,CRM250,400EXC,KLR650,TTR600RE,DR350S,R100GSPD,RGV250,VMAX1200,DL650,KZ750 Present:G650XC,C12,CRF450X,1190ADV |

So confused
Ok to give you all a benchmark, it currently has macadams on it
And i can still make it hustle down my fabourite road on them (i think alot of confidence loss in handling is from me bodging suspension up), but i just dont want to be thinking;
dont forget you paid like 25 quid for your front and 30 for your back
It's scary.
And being as i know fook all about tyres, i have no idea what all this radial whats it is about? if memory serves the front is 120, the rear is 160. And they are both 17s. I think. Cant remember what the other number meant, but i cant remember that neither.
To be fair i'll probably stick with the race scrubs idea, but id still like to know race scrubs of what? Im sure some people race with best of the best rubber, and some race with shite. ____________________ China traffic/travel bike vid - When I make a sweeping statement, please add the word 'statistically' in to the sentence before you bitch...

Hi
Radial / cross ply just refers to the internal construction of the tyre. You cannot use a radial front with a cross ply back (illegal). About 140~150 is the largest sizes of tyres available as cross plies / smallest sizes of radial.
Macadams may not be the best tyres in the world, but they are not bad and a new pair should cost you at least double what you say those cost.
Trouble with race scrubs is that they are probably not going to be much use in the rain (after all, if raining they can just use wets).
All the best
Keith
PS - the 2nd number on a tyre size is the height as a percentage of the width. ____________________ Traxpics, track day and racing photographs - Bimota Forum - Bike performance / thrust graphs for choosing gearing |

Not really, most people that sell scrubs will be using decent tyres.
The trick is to make sure you're getting their 'good' ones, though I've never been offered /too/ cack tyres. Do, if possible, have a look before you buy.
Of course it will be the sides of the tyres that are particularly knackered from racing, so it may not be such an issue for road riders.
You'll be looking at tyres from 400s, 250s and minitwins etc with 120/160. Most common choice is usually Supercorsas (go for the pro if you can, though dunno if it really makes any difference on the road) rennsports are the same with a swirly tread pattern rather than angled. Racetechs, 209GP, Pilot Race etc are also supposed to be good (though the last pilot race I used wasn't great).
I find rear race tyres don't tend to last long, while I can usually get maybe a couple of thousand out of a front? (not sure, never really measured).
Though at the mo I've got a nice stock of rear tyres that are a bit too dead for road or race use, but ideal for some donut fun . |
