This is an interesting one...the majority of my music files disappeared - literally....approximately 6gb of my shows that I record went Shocked They are not anywhere on the HD and no-one has deleted them.

Fortunately they are all backed up and I replaced them but then they went again two days later....can anyone explain?

BTW the machine is a Dell Optiplex running XP Pro

The virus itself is made for one reason and one reason only, to reproduce, destroy documents, delete mp3 files, movie files, infect .exe files, this virus also has a unique feature that destroys the BIOS (Basic Input Output System), which means ones that are infected would need to purchase a new motherboard.

It's not the only virus that deletes .mp3s. You need to dig deeper...

I don't think so - all the other applications work fine. It's a relatively new one as well.

Doesn't sound like dead hard drive at all - if it was a dead hard drive it wouldn't pick the same file types over and over again to delete.

Although i'm not saying the hard drives dell use are anygood, most of the sata/pata ones seem to be seagate which go wrong more often then i'd like for something i'm about to store all my precious data on...
