Anybody tell me which is the best stuff i can use on my VFR 400 ?

The chain & rear sprocket are pretty greasy and covered in black crap - i want to clean it up and lube it up .
However having never had to do this before i was wondering what's the best way to do it and the best stuff to use ?

I've read the guide in the workshop section - use a toothbrush coated in WD40 to clean it up , then apply the lube etc...

Is it an O-Ring/X-Ring chain?

If so, there's quite a bit of controversy as to whether to using paraffin/wd40 on them as it damages the rings.

Mine's not O/X-Ring, so I wipe over with kitchen towel soaked in paraffin, wait for that to dry, and then relube with Castrol Chain Wax (New formula, old one is gash).

Umm.

Ask it.

*shrugs*

Logic dictates that you should see 'o' rings in the links of the chain, but don't take that as gospel.

If it's O/X, you're not lubing it for the purpose of lubrication, it's to prevent corrosion.

Clean with WD-40 or chain cleaner. Re-apply chain oil (i always use grease but i don't know if it actually lubricates it! it's just so much cheaper than proper stuff).

Teeth will be hooked sometimes,

If you can lift the chain off of the back sprocket at full adjustment (at most) then it's fucked.

Replace them all as a set (Front/Rear + Chain)

Firstly clean the chain.

I use a aeresol spray chain cleaner. Spray liberaly over the chain as you rotate the wheel. I then scrub the chain with a good quality kitchen roll which won't tear easily.
I don't find the toothbrush method works well, as within seconds the brush will be covered in muck and grease. All you'll do is spread that muck around. Kitchen roll is relativly cheap, once a piece is dirty, take a new piece and that way you're actually taking the muck off the chain.

Rinse the chain (and wheel/tyre) thorougly. The cleaner is corrosive.

Gently pat the chain dry to remove excess water then leave for 20 min to fully drip dry.

Then lube your chain. I use Wurth high performance dry lube. Seems to work well. Got the best buy award from Ride mag and is about £7 for a big can.

Spray from the rear onto the chain rollers, not onto the side plates.
Give ten min for it to dry and then spray a second layer. again let it dry.

After cleaning the chain is a opportunity to check for tight links and slack adjustment. How to's will be in your manual.

If you can keep it anything like this, it should serve you well.

Does it tell you on the can whether it's "new formula" or not? I recently bought a can and, while the chain hasn't got any worse, it doesn't particularly look or feel like it's done the job Confused. Using Holt's cruddy spray-on lube felt better, somehow.

It should tell you in the bike's manual, it's usually around every 500 miles.
