Hey guys,

Just to warn you, this post is a mix of a rant, moan and confusion.!
I've read pretty much most of the posts regarding cheap insurance , and very rarely has anyone got a quote in the £1500 range (except the 600cbr fella!).

I passed my test on the 21/04/06. I did my DAS in 4 days, and passed on the 5th day. What can i say, i'm a quick learner. But before anyone gets irate, i'm fully aware thatn i'm now where near to being a great driver. And i'm expecting many weeks of practice before i'm gonna carry pillions and feel like a good rider.

My problem is this: I've held my license for like 10 days. I've got 0 years riding experiance and 0 NCB. I have been driving for three years. (man, saying this out loud is actually answering my question...)
I'm 21, I live in North London, N7, and have never been insured on a BIKE.
I want to get a sv650s no more than 5 years old for obvious reasons. However, TPFT quotes have been about £1400! and TPO about £500. The thing is, im sure i've seen 18 year old guys getting TPFT quotes on CBs and FZRs and 650 cc's, for as much as im getting TPO quotes!....is that right?

I know that I have to shop around, but at best, what am i gonna save, max £200? I want bring my TPFT quote down to £900.

Can anyone help? Or tell me what i'm doing wrong?

Thanks,

h.

A lot more than that.

I've had some places quote me over £1500 when I was getting quotes of £400 for same bike, same details from others.

I just go through the ads in biketrader calling everyone.
Boring, but worth £1100 to me Smile.

Personally, I would look at getting a few year old bike at around £1500 and use the savings for a lock.
Older bikes are cheaper to insure, even TPO.

I've been riding for 15 years and have 4yrs no claims and live in a crime free postcode. For example i got like for like quotes living here and for london postcodes for my car an the london postcode added £1000+ to the quote.

Try an online quote using no 5 pr6 8hq (my old address) and you may be supprised. Who says living up north is shit?

Try www.ebikeinsurance.co.uk. I live in one of THEE joint highest risk postcode, which is why it seems unusall to me that no bikes ever get stolen round here! Rolling Eyes. Ebike Knocked my insurance down alot! 1 years no claims, 1 years riding experience, new licence, 21 years old, fully comp on a brand spanking new SV650S-K5 for £1100. Not bad considering the lowest with other firms was £3000+!

Don't live in London would be a good place to start!

Got a garage? If not, make sure your bike is tagged and you have some sort of chain or lock or something, that'll get the insurance down. Considering the jump in cost from TPO to TPFT I'm guessing you don't have a garage?

I got my insurance through www.directchoice.co.uk. While Bennetts gave me a quote in Bath of £800, Direct Choice gave me a quote of £200. That's TPFT, Bandit 600, 4 years no claims (god bless my scooter!).

Ive found that phoning lots of different companies is the best thing.

CIA and virgin have been the best out the quotes that I have done for various bikes but that is just what I have found.

Delcalare all security that is going to be on the bike. Thumbs Up

Guys you're making my mouth water!
Those quotes are making me happy! (corny?)

I guess in essence, I have to:

Phone around as if my life depended on it.
Start with a lower spec bike and build up experience and NCB.
And tell the insurance guys that my bike's got more locks than a rasta?

Well, this is a fantastic starting point. Thanks very much to you all.

Sadly, moving out of London will mean i'll have to move my 'magazine' collection...and that's a job in itself! Cheers for the suggestion tho! Razz

When I passed my test at 31, I went from a CG to an ER-5, which cost £320 fully comp. It is garaged and ground anchored.

After a year, I dropped down over £100.

I do live in West Yorkshire, not city, but not country, sort of imbetween. We do have fields and woods near us, but the town centre is only 5 miles away.

Hit a van head on on the 8th may 2004 at 40mph. 10th may turned 17 and did my theory (on crutches at this point) 11th may did a days training for my test. I had to pretend i could walk when infact i couldn't bend me knees properly. I was told by my doctor not to ride and wouldn't have been allowed to do it if the instructors knew. Anyway the second day i had my test and passed first time with 2 minors. Cool

bear in mind that if you tell them it's got locks on, and it gets nicked without those locks on, then they might not pay out

or so I've heard.

I've not added Any security to my policy, apart from the stuff you can't not use (datatag, alarm, immobiliser) I have disklocks and D-locks, but not specifying them means I don't have to use them, and I'm still covered.

Feef is right, insurance companies will really try to not pay out if they can. If you tell your insurance company that you use a disk lock, make sure you use it.

Likewise, with a lot of policies your excess can double if your bike is stolen from not a garage when you tell them it's kept in a garage.

I always use my lock, except when I'm at work because the site is pretty secure and the security guards know who rides my bike.

I used to live in SE London/Kent bad lands, sorry border (BR5) and when I was looking around for quotes a couple of years ago (aged 21, new rider) I couldn't get anything under £1500.

Now I live in Wiltshire (SN15), aged 23, pretty much every bike I've tried bar the rediculous (Blades etc) have fallen at or below the £500 mark.

Same thing happend with my car insurance, dropped by £200.

The answer to expensive insurance....don't live in a high risk area Laughing Sorry, not much help, but may explain it a little.

This was my profile last year when I bought the Fazer after doing my DAS;

Age - 35
NCB - 0
Convictions - 1 SP30 from 2003
Value - £4000
Fully comp

Got some ridiculous quotes as high as £1300 but found a "good" deal through Bennetts for £550.

My renewal has just gone through and it cost my "just" £295, again through Bennetts. You'll always get caned for having no NCB but if you keep the bike shiny side up and your nose clean (or not get caught Wink ) you should hopefully see a nice reduction when it comes to renewing.

Thought I'd post this as a 'what not to do'!

I bought my first bike (125) in December 04. I decided on TPFT as I wanted to build up my NCD so I wouldn't be claiming for drops and such. After some searching around, I settled on Bennetts, and got a really good quote (for the record, I live in NW London, zero NCD, female, 15 years car license, no garage or driveway).

When, after four months and one successful (restricted test) I realised I wanted something a bit bigger, I went looking for a new bike. Settled on a used SV650S, and called Bennetts for a quote to upgrade my policy.

I couldn't.

The policy they'd originally found for me was what they called a 'scooter' policy - i.e. upto 125cc only. No problem, they said, we'll get you a new policy, and refund what's left on the old one. However, by the time I got the bike (July), I ended up having to lose 7 months claim-free riding, and had to restart the NCD counter from zero.

I realise that this was my fault for a) not reading the small print, and b) assuming a 125 would keep me smiling for more than a few months.

The moral of the story is - check that you can upgrade the policy with the underwriter, or keep with the same bike.

I'm not bitter, mind Evil or Very Mad

Jo

0 NCB,
Provisional license,
MZ 125 SM,
garaged.
£380 TPFT with £150 excess - Carol Nash.

I found the hardest thing was getting a decent excess value. The breakdown cover inc homestart and legal cover were a nice bonus with carol nash.

Bennets wanted £420 with a £500 excess FFS!

im 25yrs
ride a gsxr600k1
live in london high risk area
have a garage
have 4yrs NCB

My renewal quote with CIA insurance is £236 TPFT! Shocked

Last yr my insurance was £525 tpft with NCI insurance!

Now thats what i call a drop in price!

Bearing in my mind ive excluded pillion cover cos i hardly ever carry anyone so whats the point, im selfish when it comes to my bike!

Also the type of job you hold has a bearing on your insurance as i am an accountant, well i will be in a couple of months as soon as i find an accounting job.

Also ive put down that the bike is used for social, domestic & pleasure and not commuting to and from a place of work!
(I tell yee some of these insurance definitions are bloody stupid, i guess sometimes you have to read in between the lines)
