Hello all. Im off to uni this year and I am looking (well hopefully my parents Laughing ) to buy a laptop. I've set my maximum price at about 700 large ones. I'm not a gammer and will mainly be a desktop replacement. I want it to be a good multi tasker and will use it for media applications most of all. I have been think HP Pavillion but I just thought I'd check out with people in the know.
I'd like it to be able to keep up with my Desktop I currently own (maybe pass or is this asking too much on my budget?). That has a 3GHz P4 (Hyper threading) 768MB of ddr400 RAM and a 80 gig hard drive (oh and a 128MB ATI graphics card) without going into too much detail.
I'm ok when it comes to desktops and understand whats good and whats not but laptops are a bit alien to me (i've always stayed away from them)
What processors should I look out for? Many thanks and sorry for sounding a computer idiot, I'm not that bad (honest Embarassed )
Joe

If you can stretch to £750ish theres a few good ones here;

https://www.laptopshop.co.uk/new-laptops-notebooks/show600/749/4.htm

Remember the big red prices are excluding VAT

If I had that kind of cash i'd be looking at these;

https://www.laptopshop.co.uk/asus-asus_a6km_q013h-laptop-2-n2.htm

https://www.laptopshop.co.uk/acer-aspire_5612wlm_v1-laptop-1-n2.htm

https://www.laptopshop.co.uk/acer-aspire_5622_wlmi-laptop-1-n2.htm

https://www.laptopshop.co.uk/lenovo-3000_c100_tb03puk-laptop-1-n2.htm

Just a few decent ones for that money taken from the first link

Thumbs Up

Why do you want a laptop for uni?

Everyone who goes to uni says they need a laptop. They're massively overrated and I guarantee you'll use it once. Just bring your desktop to uni.

Cheers Jamie. I was pretty impressed with the spec of the Acer. I looked at those a while back when a friend was buying a laptop. I've heard some good reviews on them too only being let down by poor battery life. I'm not too bothered about the battery life, like I said it needs to be a desktop replacement rather than an ultra portable.
I will be using it at Uni as I don't want to take my desktop because I would have to bring it back and fourth from Uni every time I come home. I also have wanted a laptop for some time as I have a Guitar Port which I use and would like to be a little more mobile (i.e. be able to take round friends houses and jam). Thanks for the advice.
And thanks for the offer on the PC but I already have a desktop. will mention it to anyone that needs one tho Thumbs Up

Make dell your last option to be honest

If you knew what they did to their parts and where they got them from you wouldnt buy one

Catch my drift... Wink

Yeah thats what I've heard. My mum has a Dell Desktop, I mean it's ok but its not earth shattering stuff for the spec it supposed to be. I mean I'm almost 100% sure it was supposed to have 512MB of RAM in it but when my mum said it was running a bit slow I opened it up to find only one stic of 256MB! Evil or Very Mad O well I know I wont be buying one. Like I said though, I really like the looks of the Acer's I may even spend a little more to get a better one, I'll put money towards it, maybe up 900/1000 pound? I'm not too sure yet, just having a look around. Thanks for the info people,
Joe

Dell have an eBay store that they sell slightly damaged equipment on for peanuts (got a desktop machine for half price because of a slight scratch in the surface of the plastic)...

EDIT - Dell URL - https://stores.ebay.co.uk/Dell-Outlet

That'd be where I'd start...maybe have a look at ebuyer.com and dabs.com for special offers too..
