Hi, I've just been on the phone to my local cbt centre, and I've leant that my cbt for my 50cc will cover me for a 125cc.

So I'm trying to decide wether its worth me paying out to do the cbt, or should i just get my dad to teach me gears? I'm considering doing my restricted test when I can afford it.

So should I just do the cbt so I can learn how to operate a geared bike? or should I just get my dad to teach me?

yeh, when i first read the post quickly i though you were trying to say you could get your dad to teach you instead of learning on CBT Embarassed
I dont think you will have any trouble with gears. They may seem a bit strange at first, and it may take time to get it smooth when pulling away, but it shouldnt be too bad. Someone i know did their CBT on an auto 50cc, then got a geared 125cc. Took them a lil while to get used to it and stalled it a few times.
My advice is that you learn to pull away and stop on the driveway, then go to a quiet/closed car park and practise there until you fee confident enough to use gears out on the road.
Oh, and watch out for hill starts whilst your getting used to it Shifty

but I am wondering if it would be better to get a proffesional to show me how to do it?

learn it yourself. isnt that hard.

Or just book a lesson for ~£40ish

Retaking a CBT would be like doing the whole of year 7-11 at school to learn how to multiply.

All your doing it pulling in the clutch and pulling up or down on the gear lever, Its simple. Just dont try turning tightly before you can take off with ease incase you stall and drop the bike Thumbs Up

a cbt around here would be £85, not including the insurance (a further £10), so I guess you can see why I'm trying to save some money here.

so I guess just take it slow and I'll get used to it?

No need to retake it, gears are easy to learn. Iv taught many of my mates which no clutch experience how to use gears in about 1 minute. Most have managed to pull away first time without stalling. Just practice up and your street, if its quiet, and you will get the hang of it.

probably not best to do it on my street, as its kinda short and full of cars, but I know some places around here that would be good to pratice in, mostly at night but some places that'd be good in the day. (especially during my study leave)

Definatly get ure dad or somone to teach you, its VERY easy, and to be honest on a CBT they don't really teach it you!
So save the dosh and do it at home!

well if my 50cc cbt is anything to go by, it really wont be worth it. I hardly learnt anything, just where the breaks are and how the throttle works, oh and how it starts.

yeh i think i'll just learn it on my own ^^
