Evil or Very Mad Been looking forward to playing Civ 4 for yonks. Got it today in the post, from eBay. Loaded it up okay, plays fine except.....

I can't see any land. It appears just as a black void. In both tutorial and single player game. Yet if I use my mouse wheel to scroll out, I can see an ariel view of the map.

Sad I thought I had the minimum requirments, my laptop, a Fujitsu Seimens as a 1.4ghz Pentium 4 processor, and 256mbRAM, but I don't know what video card.

It runs everything else okay, just this problem with the map, it runs Civ 3 without any problems.

any ideas what I can do to get the game to run on this laptop, or should I just give up?
Confused

Are you on Windows XP?

Go to Start > Control Panel > Display > Settings > Advanced > Adapter.

Tell me what chipset (and video memory) you have.

The Minimum System Requirements for the game are: 1 GHz CPU, 256MB RAM, and a 32MB video card with hardware transform and lighting capabilities. The recommended Specifications are: 512MB of ram, Pentium4 processor, and a recent graphics card (like the Radeon 9800).

I'm pretty sure that onboard graphics cards don't feature HW T&L, even modern ones.

I agree mate, theres probably very few exceptions like the Radeon9000 mobile but for what laptops cost that have them in your better off buying a desktop.

Laptops weren't designed for playing games.

Well when you do, plenty of the Radeon and nVidia cards support HW T&L Thumbs Up

Is the game actually any good? I was a big fan of Civ2 but Call to Power didn't seem as good and I was put off the series.

Have played pretty much of all of the Civ series, and must say that I still enjoying playing Civ 2 the most, probably followed by Civ 4. Civ 3 was a real let down, they cut out a load of the best bits of the second and thankfully put a lot of them back in for the 4th.
