A couple of months ago i was involved in a collision, as a result my nc35 was written of after an inspection as a Cat C. On further inspection ive found the damage to be almost totaly cosmetic so ive invested and got all the parts required.

The problem is what would i have to do to reregister the bike for the road? what documents would i require, who would i have to inform and what would insurance companies say and ask for?

Would it be alot more simple to buy a clean frame and swap everything into it? Would it be hard to register the bike if i buy a clear frame with v5?

I have a bike that is Cat-C as far as i know it just means that the bike is repairable but the repairs would cost more than its worth. So if the bike still belongs to you i dont see why you couldent fix it up...

I have fixed it up mate, just trying to work out what i need to do to put the bike back on the road and get insurers to take it and if they will demand more money!

Get a V62 (i think) from the post office, fill it in and send it off. You don't have to pay the £19 fee it mentions bacause it's a cat C (though it doesn't mention this to decieve people i think and if you do send the £19 they will still take it rather than send it back).

When the V5 comes thats it, insure and mot as normal. My insurance co never even mentioned the Cat C classifaction.

I believe you need a VIC inspection certificate, send that off to the DVLA and they will re-issue you with a log book.

Something like that anyway, give the DVLA a call and they will tell you what you need to do.

Cheers lads, will pop to the post office tomorrow and ask in there after giving the Dvla a bell Smile

was partialy hoping id need a new frame (powdercoat it black) but i could do with keeping the cash!

I read somewhere a motorcycle doesnt need a VIC but a car does (was some site explaining write-offs). Because any damage to the main frame = cat A/B and that, as you know, means it wont ever end up back on the road. A cat C/D just means damaged (no frame damage anyways.) so it doesnt need a VIC because it was inspected by insurers to find out what cat write off it should be.


My DT is a cat C and im currently putting that back on the road. Ive sent off the V62 and awaiting the logbook..

I should add this too. Rear subframes are not included as the main frame. My DT has slight rear subframe damage and it still only got a cat C. Any damage from the swingarm to the headstock means it'll should never go back on the road and it'll get cat A/B status.


Ive a question though... My bike was built in 2004. Am I correct in beliving I dont need an MOT till 2007? If thats the case I just get the logbook and get it insured then buy a tax disc and all good?

Yep, thats correct.

On the subject of changine the frame. Although it's not neccessary for a cat C it can somethimes be worthwhile to get rid of the salvage marker which can scare some people off. Say you had a bike that, if unrecorded was worth £3000 but the equivelent bike with a Cat C marker was only worth £2000 it could be worth spending ~£100 and a few hours building it into an unrecorded frame. Not only a higher sale price but easier to sell too.

Will likely aquire another clear frame at some point but ive no intention of ever selling the rvf, to much work has gone into it and i adore it Smile

I thought about this but my attitude is like minesweeper. I wouldve put too much time/money/effort getting my bike upto standard so I doubt I'll ever sell it, I'll probably pass it onto my younger brother when Ive had my use out of it. he is already asking for it!

Also if the engine number and frame number mis-match thats going to raise suspision in a sale. Anyone can make up reasons why. Wouldn't it have a Q plate aswell? or could you keep the old frames reg?
