As stated in the topic, my front left indicator bulb keeps blowing. It's done it twice now, even though the bulbs are the same wattage as all the other bulbs. Doesn't seem to be much brighter than any of the others either, however some of the plastic thread inside the casing seems to have melted, so I'm guessing there's too much power flowing through it.

I don't have a multimeter so I can't check the current and voltage flowing through it. I need to take the bike in for its 8000 mile service soon, but do you think asking them to fix it would be expensive? I was wondering if putting a resistor in the wire would stop it blowing, or maybe put a higher wattage bulb in? Or maybe there's a way for me to fix it? Or perhaps I've just had a few dodgy bulbs.

opinions and advice welcome! Thumbs Up

If no other bulb is affected then no it's not excess current, same goes for the bulb if it's the right wattage and you have had a couple then it's not drawing too much and shouldn't melt the holder. You're looking at a short somewhere between the holder and the switch that is blowing the bulbs. Could well be the actual holder if it's damaged.

I've got a Datatool alarm that the indicators seem to go through to turn them all on when I arm/disarm the bike. Could this have anything to do with it?

Thanks for the reply Thumbs Up I'll try and get some pictures of the melted area

Just had a good look at the indicator again. It seems that the thread on the orange plastic had been broken, so whoever had the bike before me put in some rubber sealant inside the thread to keep the screw inside, but it had gunked up everywhere. You can see the gunk on the screw's thread circled in the (very bad) picture below.

Would this have anything to do with the bulb popping, because the tip of the bulb is almost touching the screw thread, and therefore, the rubber sealant.

If the glass was touching it wouldn't cause a short but the vibration of it against the screw wouldn't help and could easily be breaking the filament. is there any way you can run it without the screw, taped up whatever to see if the bulb lasts?. If it's OK you'll know it's vibration and can look for a new housing or better way of holding it, if it still blows it's back to checking the wiring.

Check the indicator earth connection, may well be falling apart or corroded, most likely situation as its just the one bulb going pop.

I'm going to run it now without the end screw in, because it would just fall out now I've removed all the sealant. But the right side (good side) is exactly the same as the left side (bad side) in terms of screw position and connectors, it's just the left side had all this sealant in it.

When the bulbs operate they do get quite hot. If the sealant were to melt (which I'd imagine it was doing) onto the tip of the bulb would this cause it to break a lot quicker than normal? It normally takes the bulb about 3 weeks to break.

The connectors inside the indicator look brand new, no corrosion at all. The wire then goes about 20cm out the end of the indicator to a 2-into-1 connector under my headlights with the other connector from the other side. This 2-into-1 connector is totally encased in a clear plastic surround and doesn't look too bad inside. I can't see any frayed wire ends either, it all looks pretty decent.
