Just opened the fan access panel on my laptop and removed a solid lump of dust 3X5X30mm in size from between the fan and heatpipe/cooler. This stopped any cooling effect.

Laptop now runs a lot cooler and quieter and doesn't cut out after 20mins or so.

Also couldn't run any CPU intensive programs like virus/spywire scans without overheating which I'm doing now while I write this.

You may need new CPU heatpads depending on your laptop, some like mine have a heatpipe on the CPU and need the heatpad replaced after CPU removal but these are cheap from maplins.

I had to do this too, my laptop wouldn't run Photoshop or anything without the fan going into overdrive and shutting down. And the base of it was getting so hot it would literally burn me.

Cracked open the fan, on the cooling fins there was what looked like a load of compacted snuff tobacco, enough to fill a couple of thimbles. Mr. Green

I did actually give it a bit of a going-over with the attachment thingy on my Dyson, and it's stopped making the "hard-drive-about-to-die" noise now, also (fingers crossed) no more blue screens of death since last week so I am hopeful that it just needs a bit of TLC (and a new battery).

This is an incredibly common problem with laptops. Hair and dust gets trapped in the heatsink and creates a mesh, which builds up and up until airflow almost stops completely.

If you suspect it needs doing, just put your hand at the exit port and see if there is any warm air blowing out. If not, or very little, it's time for a clean as above. Be careful when doing this though, the air can be very hot. Better to check it when you first boot up, rather than when the fan is on overdrive.

Just get a can of compressed air. You can pick them up in most computer shops, it just blasts the crap out, works really well
