What Should i Do?

Right so this is my first post here, so hello all.
Bascially i dont know what to do about getting my first bike.

I was thinking about getting a geared 50cc but i dont think ill get one round my area so should i :
1) Get a twist and go moped to get road experience on
2) Just save up for a 125 when im 17(next year)

first get an rs125... add a few ingredents like bigger carb, arrow exhuast,carbon fiber bits and bobs, panel filter and a racing cdi..(this is what i did anyway, and worked out pretty pointless)

so heres the real answer, get a cheap 125, pass ur bike test and get a vfr400 which is the dogs bollocks...

yeah all ur mates would be impressed if u passed ur test. all my mates hate me cause i have a 400 while there still on there crappy 2strokes looooool

again like people say, if u want transport now then get a geared cheap 50cc but then get a crap 125 and then pass your test and get what you want......you say everyones gelous of your 400 but its restricted i take it so its not quicker, is it?

I think the best way forward is to take and pass a test in order to ditch the "L" plates. I get quite narked at times when I see how other road users treat learners on mopeds and small bikes so think the sooner those "L" plates come off the better but from what I gather it'll be really really expensive. I really feel for you young 'uns with regard to how much you get stung for insurance. It can limit your options.

I want a big boys bike, preferably a Speed Triple. To date I have ?7:42p stashed away to put towards one. Need to get it in the bank & earning interest asap.

IMO, unless you really need some transport right now, then id forget getting any sort of 50cc bike, and just save up for a secondhand but still decent 125 bike. If you don't buy a 50 now, you might be able to afford a far nicer/better 125 next year. You have already indicated that your intention is to go the 125 route when your 17, so id say it would be best to save up now, and then get a nice 125 for around the time of your birthday, or a bit before if you want to buy a bike and work on it/fix it up ready for when you can ride it.

Everyone says don't spend alot of money on a 125 and if and when you pass your test, you will want to sell it and get a bigger bike after 6-12months tops!
The thing is though, if your happy with a 125, and having passed your test would be restricted to 33bhp for 2years, with no option of an accelerated access test, then you might just as well keep your existing bike for that period. Id much rarther have a mint condition RS125 or similar for two years, than buy an old 125 ride it for a few months, then sell it, and have to buy another bike, quite probably an older large capacity bike, that will then need restricting, and so on!

I did DAS at 21, and then found out that i couldnt afford to insure a Hornet/SV650/ sporty 500-600cc bike, not a brand new one anyway! So i ended up for 18months riding a KMX200, and now im really glad i did, as i got some NCB and had loads of fun/experience on a small bike for a while which allowed me to save up for 2years to then buy an even better bike (ZX6R), and without those 2years NCB, i would never have been able to insure a decent big bike anyway.

if you need the transport (ie you use the bus or parents right now for stuff) and its gonna be a while till your 17 just get a twist and go scooter, you can get them cheap and despite what people say i think they are fun to ride, dead easy to learn, corner well and theres not much that you can damage if you do drop it (when i did i had to buy a £1 indicator cover that was it )

if your working part time get as much done as you can, so you can get the bike as soon as you can

Well I'm confused with all this DAS and stuff (I passed my test before it came into play) but I enjoyed my time on a 50cc but cheap is good better to drop an old bike thats been dropped before hence the price than a shiney new one then when you go to sell and upgrade you will probably get your money back. I remember being laughed at by all my mates for having a hairdryer with wheels but I knew it was only temporary

The cheaper 125s (CG125 and the like) are also good (or test centres wouldn't use them) like has been said before pass your test I wish I had done it sooner. I think some of the 125s made up to look like bigger bikes is quite funny. When I was a learner and after my test I rode a KMX 125 on it I was able to sit upright at 80mph so didn't look as daft.

A restricted 400cc I would imagine will still have a bit of kick in it and actually looks like a 'real' motorbike and have I got this right would he be able to derestrict after 2 years? Or does another test have to be passed?

The way i went was to ride a 125 for a couple of years getting a bit of road sense.... did a das then went for a 93 RF 600... it was a bit of a jump but the bike is awesome, and to boot the yearly insurance went from £300 a year for the 125 to £174 fully comp on the RF. After the 125 take the jump and go for a 600... once you get used to the power and the weight you wont look back... my wife hasnt seen me for a month and i have got 1500 miles under the belt on the devon roads.....
