Test advice needed! :)

Hi!

This is my current situation;
CBT runs out in September this year,
I turn 21 in August this year.

Now I am unsure of what I should do. Do I take my Restricted test now (at 20 years old) and then be restricted for 2 years to 33bhp , or shall I wait until August when I am 21 and then do the DAS (so I won't have to bother with the restrictions)?

The thing is that if I go for the second option (doing the DAS at 21) I don't want to end up failing my test and having my CBT run out causing me to repeat that! (only 1 month from my birthday to CBT expiry lol)

Any advice?

I'd take it now and get a second hand bike for 2years, learn to ride properly, get everything right

book your DAS with a few extra lessons if you think you might fail

It would also work out a lot cheaper for you to take your restricted test if that was an issue regarding what to do for the best. Even if you had a lesson or two before hand you wouldn't have to spend nearly as much money as you would need to in order to pass the DAS. Plus, like you said yourself, in the event of failing the DAS you'd have the expense of taking your CBT again. But, that goes whichever test you take.

If you're not bothered about riding a restricted bike then do the restricted test. If you are bothered then take the DAS route. Insurance premiums are likely to restrict what bike you'll end up riding whichever test you end up taking.

I would take the A2 restricted (i did the other day!) and then you are sure of not having to take cbt/theory&hazard again, then you can always do the accelerated access at any future date after you are 21, then even if you fail that you still have your restricted licence. The A2 test is £58 so I'd say have a go & if you fail it's not much more than lessons cost. I passed on the 2nd attempt so it cost me £116, thats it.

Hi!

Thanks for all the advice/ideas. It helps me to think about what is best for me to do.

I am now thinking that it would be best to do the restricted test (as I don't want the pressure of the DAS knowing the CBT will expire very close to when I am taking that + the fact the restricted test will be cheaper ). And as jules666y has said, I could always then do the accelerated access when I am ready in order to get rid of the 33bhp restriction.

If anyone else has any more suggestions, then they will be much appreciated.

Also it just seems such a waste of dosh doing the cbt again when you've been riding for a while. that would cost a bit too wouldn't it? Is it about £100 to do the cbt still?

Sign up for one of the intensive training courses - 3 or 4 days - when you're 21. That way you get the training on 125 (if required) and then a 500. The test is already booked and included at the end. Some training schools will also give you free lessons for the next test in case you should fail (usually inside a week).

Obviously if you already have a 125 then it'll be good to practice on beforehand (and after lessons to brush up on the days events) but not actually essential.

Ok, not the cheapest option but it gets it out of the way and you find it's the best investment of time and money you can make.

If you do the DAS it cuts it fine if you do fail (& i hope you don't) as you can't retake it for at least 10 days anyway, and you're a bit short of time. All I meant really was that you haven't got much to lose by trying the restricted test, 2 attempts wouldnt cost you much more than having to do a cbt (which would be a complete waste of money) and then there would be a good chance of a pass, you could still buy any bike & get it restricted until you did the accelerated, or wait the 2 years.

Book a short 2-3 day course culminating in your DAS test a day or two after your 21st birthday. Do the theory test way beforehand (actually, book it now and get it done).

Most training places will block book some test slots each week. They have to cancel them 10 days beforehand or they loose them. Explain the situation to the test centre. Get them to pencil you in for a second and third test 11 days and 22 days after your first test. That way you'll get 3 goes at the test prior to having to redo your CBT. If you pass, the school can cancel the test(s) and won't loose any money.

Alright guys, thanks for all the info...I will have to make a choice on what to do soon but this has helped quite alot.

I am going to book my theory and get that done and out of the way.
