I've had the front end light under acceleration before, but i wasn't prepared for that i did yesterday.

I filtered through some traffic to the lights, and a guy following me on a GPZ (i think it was a 900) filtered up between the right hand lane and the right hand filter. I knew he could cane me off the lights, but i fancied seeing if i could at least minimise the whooping.

the green light comes and Cues a huge wail from my engine while the clutch is at biting point, then i let it out. Shocked The front end then obscured the horizon and there was no weight going through the bars. The bars then had a wobble tank-slapper style, but it lasted for 2 or 3 oscillations, and didn't really fight, i think it was more me pulling on them then over correcting while the front was airborne.

Anyway, i landed the wheelie nice and smoothly as i was still under full acceleration (never considered braking) and beat the GPZ from the lights (he obviously wasnt trying).

Still, i shit myself half to death but it was a damn good rush.

Anyone else ever accidentally clutched it up under hard acceleration?

Jack

I often get that wobble when coming down from a wheelie, I really must keep the bars straighter. It doesn't worry me any more, but one day I bet it will turn into a full-on tankslapper. Confused

One of my main fears of my bike is a tank slapper. The mito has a damper, the planet doesn't. That means that cagiva must have felt it necessary to fit a damper to the mito to prevent slapping, yet my bike has the same geometry but had the damper sacrificed for styling.

I've done a couple of accidental ones while trying to pull away quickly.

Thing is, they were the worst type where it comes up real high in the blink of an eye, i panic, shut off the throttle and it comes crashing back down. I then compose myself and try to set off normally, all to looks of disgust and disaprovement from the cage drivers. Very embarassing. Confused

Ive never really even tried to pull a wheelie on the road.. let alone an accidental one, you must have to lay down some serious beans and be pretty light on the front..

I did one recently test riding a GPZ500S - I think the gearing might have altered though. I was at a roundabout waiting to join and it was taking for frikkin ever for a gap to appear so the first chance I got I went for it, only to find the front coming up quite rapidly. I didn't think I had dialled in that many revs, but it was too easy.

i nearly pulled one by accident last week but if i did i would have been slung down the road.

the car to the left of me pulled away so i gave it a handfull and dumped the clutch too quickly (i ride a thundercat quite a heavy 600 but still a fast bike for it's class).

and the bike started kangarooing (like a cowboy riding a bull)

so i panicked and pulled the clutch back in and gave it more revs (about 10,000).

and my brain managed to get the message across to my hands that if i tried to set off like this i would be in a world of pain.

so i dropped the revs and managed to slowly set off from the lights whilst holding up my left hand to thank the car drivers for waiting for me to either set off from the lights in a 12 o'clock wheelie or get slung down the road.

yup, done it recently, me and the mrs both shat ourselfs, 1st gear at about 9k came right up, thought to myself "better put that back down" and clunked it into second and rolled off, scary but what a rush, did it again, but only went light the second time.

It's pretty specific on the Cat. If you wind it all the way back in 1st and hit 8k the front wheel will skip on the ground, but you won't get a wheelie. Of course, with a pillion you might be looking at a full wheelie.

Wind it on all the way when you're at 8k, and the front wheel goes sky high. I've been using this to refine my wheelie technique. Thumbs Up

Pillions are fun for power wheelies...

For a accidentle wheelie the biggest and most scary has to be accelerating over a tiny bridge, sharper than i thought the front left the ground, and went flying skywards within miliseconds Crying or Very sad rolled off some throttle and it came down. Quite a few people around too Confused Cool

I've intentionally tried it over crests, TT style; but the front stays planted. Even tried to get both wheels off by hitting it at about 80mph. The bike stays on the ground and i float about 2 feet above it clinging onto the bars for dear life. Smile

I did one in front of a packed Lord Street in Southport. So bloke thought I was tailing him (I wasnt!) so he kept braking on me I got all flustered. Got to the round about stalled in the middle so I freaked out big time. Kept reving but nothing (had clutch in) then i let go,

well lets just say my L plate got ripped off the back and every one moved as i shot off down the road and tank slapped to hell upon landing it for a good 20ft.

How I didnt fall off I will never know.

Proper shit me up for ages. Had to stop further up and compose myself!

Thumbs Down Sick

I can pull wheelies from my RS from a standstill but when riding along anymore than 5mph its impossible...... unless you have a humpback bridge like the one near me Twisted Evil

Its pretty stupid really as you cant see whats the other side, so its not an often thing but if I hit that bridge at 50mph + then I and the bike are sky bound with the back wheel off the ground for a millie second and the front for what seems an eternity. Twisted Evil

Girlfriend did on her CBR400 NC23 about a month ago. We normally have a little traffic light GP, she was listening to her Ipod, head bopping away to some ACDC I expect.... Lights go green and she's away, full throttle almost Smile (It's got a uprated clutch to, it's like a on/off switch almost) front wheel comes up about a foot or so, she shits herself and lets the throttle go but as soon as it goes down she's right on the power again popping another littler wheelie Smile I giggled all the way home.. Bloody Hooligan.

nope, it means the damper on the mito is there more for show, as a fashion accsory than for purpose. generally a damper is only needed on high power bikes as the hard acceleration of the bike usually is a high contributing factor to a tankslapper.

so no need to worry, a mito definatly does not need a steering damper

You should of saw my accidental wheelie coming out of the petrol station Rolling Eyes

Basicly you turn left out of this exit onto this A road and I was still turning to straighten it up. But I decided to blip the clutch to get it going quickly.

Anyway the front lifted, I was at an angle, then it landed with the front wheel pointing left. tank slapper followed which was rather violent, only for like 3 times like what happend to you, but it actually threw my leg of the peg! Fucking having a majour tank slapper Mad

Get a 150 big bore kit, and maybe downgear it so it only hits about 90mph at 11,000 rpm. That wheelies, trust me Smile
