Trade or Private

Hi,

I am looking to buy my first bike, going for a Yamaha XVS 125.

I have been looking around the usual places biketrader, local shops etc and looking to pick up a bike that is a few years old 2003-04 and only done 2 to 3000 miles

Going private it looks that I could save a few hundred pounds than buying trade.. and that could be used for helmet etc.

The problem is that I know nothing about bikes.. ie what to look for, how a bike should feel/sound.. about the only thing I could do is check for rust!!

Is there much risk in going private if the bike is MOTed with low mileage or should I just go trade as I know that they will have serviced the bike before selling it (and some offer a 3 month warranty).

I don't have any friends who have bikes who I could take along with me!!
