I can't get to sleep very easily.

A bit of background.
I work as a barman and work till about half eleven 2 nights a week, and till 1AM on saturday nights.

I've also got a big royal marine audition next week, which i am a small bit worried about.

I try and go to bed about 11PM-12PM as i'm wide awake till about this time, but i goto bed and can't 'switch off' i normally put quiet music or a film on, as silence feels like murder and i just think to much and never get to sleep.

Lately i have been getting tired/falling asleep later and later, tuesday it was 2AM, yesterday was 4AM, and tonight Confused

I always get up at 8:30AM, to do my training (running, pressups, etc.) and then go about my day, so it's not like i'm lounging around all day.

Anyone got any ideas on how i would be able to get to sleep easier?

cheers. Drummer

One simple change that I find helps is to only use your bedroom for sleeping. That way when you decide it's time for bed, you go to your room and sleep. No watching tv or using the pc etc.

Try setting an alarm for 7-8am and get up when it goes off. Don't let yourself stay in bed late, you'll be tired at night then.

Get out and exercise during the day to make you more tired.

Drink more water. Saw something on tv yesterday about people getting dehydrated in their sleep especially in this weather. It stops you from sleeping properly.

Rick.

This will sound just a lot stupid! But what someone said to me once was that I should write the time I wanna awake on my forehead. This worked well it seemed! and with my alarms this got me up!

I am getting similar problems, I work shifts and try to get to the gym 3 times a week aswell as football twice a week on top! I get pissed off with this meaning that if I wake up late I miss the gym! Damn that shiftwork.

Move your alarm to the other end of the room! That way you have to get up, and after a week or two your body will get used to it.

This is all over the place I know, but another thing that I found helpful was a glade freshener which was a drowsy herbacious scent as well as some 'night-eze' or summat alike (just ask if you can have some herbal sleeping tabs at boots/superdrug) which were herbal sleep tablets!

They worked perfect and I would use them two products as my main reccomendations!

getting up in the morning isn't really the problem, it's switching off at night. i use my bedroom all the time, it's basicly my lounge. (living with parents, avoiding them Smile )

never really been a fan of sleeping 'pills' would prefer natural sleep. But it seems that someone i'm seeing (who has insomnia) gets more sleep then i do

Im not a fan of pills, or even paracetemol, but it got that bad that I started taking some herbal pills as said and they worked a treat! Possibly placebo affect, but really helped me earlier in life!

I have the same problem, I just can't get to sleep and sometimes just do not feel tired at all. Just check out the time this was posted and I still feel wide awake.

I also work as a barman part-time. 3 nights a week. 7pm-12am. Get home for about 1am.

I usually end up getting to sleep at about 8am when I am absolutely exhausted then I'm awake again for 10am. Thank god I'm on my summer holidays.

Last week I thought I would solve the problem by not going to sleep at all then by the time it comes to a normal bed time I would be fecked then would sleep. Which I did. I went to bed at 10pm, fell asleep as soon as my head touched pillow. I set my alarm so I would wake up at about 8:30am, but, slept through the alarm until 1pm. FFS! The cycle just continued. Sad

Even McGee goes to bed before I do. Laughing

That's your problem. When we were preparing for exams, one of our tips was not to study were you sleep as your brain is conditioned to sleep in your bedroom so you will feel sleepy while sleeping. The opposite is true for you. Your brain is conditioned to believe that your bedroom is were you are awake, so trying to go to sleep their is hard as your brain doesn't associate it with sleep.

Try not to use your bedroom for nothing other than sleep. If you want to avoid your parents, go out. But, leave your room for sleeping.

Make sure you wake up in daylight (by that I mean, with daylight coming into your room through the window, so curtains open).

Your body is designed to be awake during the day and asleep at night and regulates this by levels of a hormone called melatonin which is released when you are exposed to daylight.

By making sure you wake up in daylight, you keep your bodies biorythms in-synch by waking up with a rising level of melatonin.

Hot, milky drinks work wonders just before you go to bed (or when you are in bed, before you go to sleep).

Or try reading any book by one of the classical female novelists of the 19th century. I recommend the book I had to do for higher English called "North and South" by Elizabeth Gaskell. I give you 'till page 4 before you are blowing zeds.

Just joking you about mate, I know what you mean Smile

To be honest, I found the easiest way is to let your sister waffle about whatever the local gossip is, trust me you'll drop out before you hear that second, 'And oh my god, you want to see Sash, what she was wearing..."

Instead of waking up and doing your exercise in the morning do it before you go to sleep. Excercise before bed should make you tired.

Reading a boring book before you sleep, or sudoko should do it too Embarassed

Usually when I can't sleep its because I have alot on my mind, thinking about things ect which I don't have time to think about when i'm at work all day.

Is it a situation of empathy driving you to do the same? Like blokes who feel preggers when thier MRs are? (There is a term for it, but cant remember Laughing ).

See the doc if you really get less sleep than an insomniac Thumbs Up

It'll also give you a great way to break the ice when trying to have a conversation. They'll want to know what the numbers on your forehead mean. Then you can tell them all about how it helps you sleep.

I heard thats because of the drop in potassium levels in the body! Don't know how true that is though...
