I can tell you one thing for sure.

They are crap at aircraft recognition, having personally whooped the arse of a frontline RAF regiment air defence unit on an overseas base in this very subject using kilometer sillhouettes when I was 15.

Which is worrying considering they have their finger on the button of a rapier anti-aircraft missile system.

They're better at it than the Yanks though .

I agree. They have had a bit of a past with friendly fire and other mistakes.

the funniest for me was when american shot down what they thought was an Iraqi plane when there was no iraqi air force left

Right Yoko, back to your Original Question, have you tried the RAF Regiments website? If not then here it is:

Its basically just the RAF's Infantry regiment, but they will soon only be a field squadran as Rapier missiles are going to be handed over soley to the Royal Artillery ( Army) im told. Pretty simple to get into really if thats what your thinking. But Personally id rather do the " Proper" 24 week Infantry course at Catterick in the Armys infantry myself. Or Join the Marines.

Hi there mate, im full time RAF, but not in the Regiment (rockapes).

The rocks do get a fair coating from the Army, and the rest of the RAF to be fair, but the main job for them is airfield defence.

I believe training is about 6 months over in Honnington, and they will have you believe that the course is exactly the same as the marines course. Whether this is true or not i dont know, but i doubt it.

Most gunners spend their time as an SAC being bossed around, and get to CPL and then become instructors. RAF regiment instructors often train up normal airman such as myself in fieldcraft, and pre deployment training to hostile areas.

The new guys out of training tend to take a while to stop being brainwashed into thinking they are the best of the best, some never stop thinking that, and the regiment do tend to keep within their own social group. Interaction does happen with other trade groups, but normally its ten of them laying into one poor "Guin" (Non RAF regiment gunner), after a few beers too many in the Naafi

To find out if you really like it, then id suggest getting yourself on the potential gunners aquiantence course like i did and finding out for yourself.
